I need to change the thermostat on my 53 plate (2L petrol) VW Passat, i have tried to locate it but i am unable to see the housing so i am unsure where to start, can anyone help

Already changed the temp sender, made no difference the gauge still only reads 60 not 90 as normal so it must be the therm, unless their is more than one temp sender?

The new sensor could be faulty. I had a similar problem, but was fortunate to have two Passats. I swapped the sensors to confirm the fault and then ordered a new sensor. When fitted, same fault. Swapped it to other car, fault again. The next replacement was ok.
However, having said all that, the other Passat had an identical fault where the thermostat was faulty. It's located near the water pump I believe. VW always manage to find the most inaccessible places for their sensors

Thanks Igorian, as a matter of interest did you change the thermostat yourself or did VW carryout the repair. I am told it takes around 1.7 hours to change the stat (circa £250) the stat alone is £50 from VW so not exactly maintenance friendly design.

VW dealers are a rip off. I found an independant VW repair centre. It cost less than £100 and included the stat and new anti-freeze.
1.7 hrs to change the stat
If you look on the front left hand side of the head, you'll see the main hose which goes to the top of the radiator. Undo the 2 bolts (i think) on the flange which holds it to the head and the thermostat is behind that.
Go for a genuine VW one rather than a cheapo one, not alot of difference in price. Also use genuine VW anti freeze.
The only awkward part of the job is bleeding the air from the system, but there may well be bleed valves in the cooling system on the newer ****rats

I have been told by a friendly VW service guy over the phone the housing is under the inlet manifold, problem is you can't get the bottom bolt out of the alternator the rads in the way so its anybodys guess, short of taking the manifold off. how they change it without removing the front of the car.
