I have been using plastic piping for a couple of jobs over the last year (personal jobs) but would like to move on to copper.

I understand that it is possible to get pipe connectors that have a solder ring inside them? What I am not sure or can't seem to find on tool sites is what I need to make them work?

Is it just a normal blow torch or can you use a special heater? Someone told me you can get a kind of crimp tool that heats around the ring but does not involve naked flame?

the stlye of fitting you are refering to is called yorkshire as in yorksire elbow, or yorkshire t piece.

and yes you can get a set of "electric cripmers". Personally i use blow torch , steel wool (to clean surfaces first) and lots of flux, oh and more solder to be sure

not trying to be a clever b*****er but minimal flux is all thats required.thats what i've been shown.wipe off any excess.if you use too much you will get solder runs where the flux is.also you should'nt need more solder but maybe a little as backup just in case.just make sure its wire wooled well till shiny. :D

of course you can get exactly the same effect using plain copper jounts, a roll of solder, flux and a blowtorch. The joints will be much cheaper than the yorkshire ones and it is very easy to make a good joint

Have a look at this tool here

I think that is what you were reffering to when you said a crimper, I suppose it would be for when a naked flame isn't possible.

anyway, see what you think

Don't bother with the Pipemaster, I purchased one some years ago used it on a job and when the system was filled most of the joints leaked. Had to remake all of them with a blow torch. It now sits rusting away in the garage. They are a good idea, but just dont get hot enough quickly in my opinion, so on a long or large diameter run the pipe sinks the heat away quicker than the tool can generate it.

Stick with the blow torch.
