I would advise your dad to get on a Plumbing course if he has the aptitude and is still fit! Always call for plumbers and good money too!

You must be joking! Fast track plumbers are ten a penny and clueless.

Become a spark and your laughing, they do sod all and it's hardly complicated.

BOTH VERY GOOD AS HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN BOTH

but what course and how long

full time 16 weeks, 6 weeks are perfect

but 1 day a week for a year they are not kean on

cheers

Be VERY wary of any course that appears to 'teach and qualify' you quickly.

They make them sound very good, making out there is a need for hundreds of plumbers and that we all earn £100K per year

Reality is there are now hundreds of plumbers out of work, hardly anyone earns £100K and all your father will get is relieved of his £4K.

Once qualified, most firms will not take on fast track trainees, especially when there is an abundance of skilled and experienced engineers.

Sorry, but that is the reality check.

if i had my time again(putting reccession to 1 side),i would become a brickie and the reason is the ammount of tools or lack of them you need to carry out your job,and you could even get to quite a few jobs by bus whereas i defo need a van,i know a few bricklayers and the cost of setting themselves up with a basic tool kit to do most things will not even cover the cost of my cordless drill let alone all the the stuff i have/need.

do they still do the intensive courses where you attend college constently for 6mths???.

Neither. A full-time 16 week course will get you half a qualification - you'll get a technical certificate that proves you know the theory, but you'll be missing the vocational qualification that shows that you've got work experience and can actually put the theory into practice.

1 day a week for a year isn't a full course either, for plumbing on day release you're looking at 3-4 years, I suspect sparkies are similar. There seems to be a bit more work for sparkies than plumbers at the moment, certainly in my neck of the woods, but it's scarce all round and nobody will take on someone who's not done the proper course at the moment. If he's lucky he might find someone prepared to take him on to do an apprenticeship, but he shouldn't expect more than £NMW for a looooooong time.

I am a Bricklayer and have a chippie mate who says " here he comes with his old bucket of rust" when we meet on site, but he cant set out an elliptical arch or even lay one true brick whereas i can assemble and fit a lining, hang a door , skirting ect ect .
What is a basic brickies tool kit,? Trowel and level ? Travis Perkins £25 ! my WHS Trowel £50 , Stabila Level £80 ! some bucket of rust !

On the original question if he has some experience in construction i would get into freelance Health and safety. someone i know earns £300 per day visiting sites keeping an eye on the H&S for the main Contractor Bloody doddle and he does'nt even have to get his hands dirty !
