What's our next big industry?

I was just thinking about the future of British industry... What do you think our Next Big Thing is? We have been world leaders in various industries over the years.

In the 18th and 19th centuries we were all about the mills.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was steel, shipping and steam.
For most of the 20th century we had a thriving motor and aviation industry.

We do still have a pretty good set of high-tech industries, but I don't think it actually defines us in the way that our earlier industries did, nor are we at the world forefront as we were in earlier years.

I honestly can't think "What industry will define 21st century Britain to people in the 22nd century?", anyone got any suggestions?

Land ownership !! At the end of the day - You cannot import it you cannot create it cheaply you may be able to convert it...
Buy a chunk with a river running through it, a nice coppice or three and you may live out your life free of fuel bills, perhaps even the thick end of water charges.
Whilst growing your own nourishment... Blimey, you may start a bartering system .. then invent money ... Become a Banker...

Exactly right!
We as a country are finished as a manufacturing base, what we have is just hanging on, and barely surviving.
I doubt very much if we could ever, start a manufacturing enterprise that could return a profit, we are just not competitive enough.
The third world (so called) countries are the rich countries of tomorrow, due to their low labour costs, however when that labour force wakes up and realises they are not being paid enough?
Then the balance may swing the other way, and we may once more be able to compete.

Having said that made me think why supermarkets havnt cashed into that side of the market, they try muscling in on everything else including banking, insurance .......

Just think of all the special offers they could sell along with buying two cans of beans
