My partners ancient boiler has just had it's pilot light go out. I can't see how to relight it (the instructions on the inside of the cover are illegible). There are two buttons side by side, one red and one white. I would have thought that I would hold in the white button whilst pressing the red one. But I get no spark. Power is running to the boiler.

I'm sure that if I call out an engineer they will say it's not repairable, can't get the points, etc and try and sell me another. So any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Most of these old boilers are totally repairable and the small components are normally standard components and all still available.

However, its old and inefficient and time to consider replacing it soon for an efficient condensing model and save about 40% of the gas bill!

Red button is to turn it OFF .
So just press the white button down and look for ignition button or light pilot with a taper if its accesable

Ideal Concord. Replace the T/C lead and clean out the pilot injector, it will probably run for another 10 years. Cost of running? Ouch............

Must say that if parts are obsolete then we dont recommend either cannabalizing from other Concords, or using other manufacturers parts - its classed as ad hocing the boiler, and not exactly legal!

That probably translates into " replace your boiler but if you have any sense you will fit anything else as long as its not another Ideal" !

And if you also wondered:-

Ad hocing. The application of rules involves the use of devices fitted precisely for the purpose of hand. Appeals to 'unless-clauses 'etc,' or phrases such as 'let it pass,' 'for now,' and 'given that..' all are examples of ad hocing. See finitism.

or Baxi/Potty

Get a new boiler in - and get one of these lot to fit it lol

OP
it is probably just a thermocouple, at worst a gas valve Thermocouple no problem with getting think you can still get the gas valve
inefficient yes but probably costing you less than a new boiler plus all its repairs that will be needed in the next 5 years
choice is yours

either repair and spend a bit more on gas
or get a new boiler ££££'s plus repair it in a year or so

where are you in Wilts as I cover Salisbury & surrounding area

i also have an ideal boiler- old but very good.i was under the impression that these modern condensing boilers are not that good, with an average life span of just 7 years (google it) and v.costly to repair.so dont be hasty.these old models can be repaired, who cares if the output is not "green". lots of tradesmen swear by the older boilers. thats my tuppenceworth, cheers all.
ps: common fault is that the thermocouple will need replacing if pilot keeps going out, screwfix direct sell a universal kit that you can fit for a fiver! easy to work on too compared to modern stuff
