Can you tell me if it is right that these still work when the green light is extinquished.
I have had one of these for all my PC equipment. Now it is my fault that I have had it hidden and as a result only the red light is glowing. Maybe a surge occurred a while ago and extinquished the green bulb and another surge last week killed my PC.
I obviously cannot claim as a) I never registered the adaptor, and B) only realised 2 weeks later that I had the adaptor and the green light wasn't on.
For future knowledge, I would like to know.
After a surge should the adaptor cease to work or does it - like mine - continue to work but without protection. If that is the case, can I buy one that has reset button or similar. Any help / advice appreciated.

Without seeing the item in question and any legends near the green light, its impossible to say.

Its a safebet to say though, that the failure of the MOVs will not prevent the device from working as an extension cord... the lack of a green light could mean:

A) The MOVs have failed, and thus protection is now absent
B) There is no earth connection, and thus there is a shock risk as well as protection being absent
C) The green neon has simply failed

There is no such thing as a resetable version, a MOV will smoove over surges of certain magnatude, but given one too big it'll fail as it does so, there is nothing you can do about this, expect move to a more industrial solution with bigger MOVs

can you tell me how many fingers I am holding up?

You can't because my question is similar to yours, not enough information has been given. Read the instructions or any note (legend) on or adjacent the green light.

If you suspect you have had a lightning strike or other surge change the lead, since it is cheaper than a new PC.

The MOV Adam_151 speaks of is a tiny component that blows up (self sacrifices) if there is a usrge, it does this to stop the surge going any further.

since they are connected across the supply anything with one fitted may still work after the MOV has done its job

If it helps, i had one go off in a bad ligtning storm, i did wonder at the time what it was
