Hi All,

This has probably been asked before (but I couldn`t find it !).

I need to strip various layers of paint of our internal door frames cos the missus now wants them stained, what`s the best way to do this , chemical, heat gun, sanding or get someone else to do it !!!

I aslo need to strip the varnish of the hardwood stairs because, you guessed it, she wants that painted !!

Cheers

Definitely get someone else to do it ;)
For large flat areas get yourself one of these either buy or hire if you can.

Any other method will take forever and a day to get back to a surface suitable for staining.
If you need to stripp moulded architraves then its either chemicals or heat gun I would prefer the heat gun method (just go careful so as not to scorch the wood)as you will need an enormous amount of chemicals.
Paint hardwood stairs Noooooo. you'll only be stripping them off in 5 years time when she wants the door frames painted and the stairs stained :D :) :D

If its door frames you want to strip ie moulded section and theres lots of paint on them, I'd first use a heat gun to get the bulk of it off (should bubble up and come off easily) then I'd use paint stripper (ie nitromores from B&Q). Brush on liberally and wire wool off with about No 3 grade. This should get the paint residue OUT of the grain which the gun will struggle to do. If you use paint stripper only on the whole job, it'll turn into a orrible gungy mess if your not careful not to mention expensive because of the quantity of stripper needed.

there are various products avaliable which come in a paste form. these are libreally applied and then wrapped in clingfilm and left for a period of time. They are then lireally peeled away along with the paint, not tried it myself and not aware of the names, but very gunge free and results look impressive from what ive seen.

best advice i can give mate is to buy new flockin doors.i tried this once on an old external door with nitromoors  and what a major b%$l ache.i managed to do it eventually but it took an eternity.take the bread knife out for a chinese or summat and drop it to her gently that new doors might be a better option

Stripping stair spindles is an awful job and I agree it would be better to replace them. However, if you want to paint them why not paint straight over the varnish? You would need to clean them, key with fine sandpaper, wipe down with meths and apply paint, but test a small area first to check compatability.

Thanks for the replies Guys,

bloody woman watches too man tv house makeover shows ........................................ : :(

Anything you can remove, take to the stripper. Only way to get a really clean job. Wash carefully after - they will say it's clean, but....
Anything left, hot air would do - eventually - but learning how to strip with a blowlamp is worth the effort if you have a lot to do.
NOT on the spindles on the stairs though (50 spindles of painful experience).

I know that here in Belgium you can get your woodwork sandblasted. Not had it done myself but have seen the results (on a staircase) and they were very impressive. They will also do doors and mouldings. Only problem is with the mess so best to get it done on an empty house

Dipping does a good job but i have read many reports of problems with the wood splitting afterwards (but have not done it myself so am only reporting what I heard)

Thanks for the suggestions Guys, certainly gives me a few options, divorce being one of them

as i am a painter & decorator i usually use a heatgun to get the worst of it off then apply paint stripper to remove the harder stuff followd by a good sand but remember to wash all the paintstripper off if you dont it will be verry irritating on the skin :)

your door frames have probably already perished but i thought id reply anyway
