I'm currently decorating the lounge and this seemed like a good time to fix something thats been bugging me for a while.
We have the main socket for the telephone in the hall and a wire comes from there, goes around the frame work of the toilet door, then a cupboard door, then sneeks round and under the carpet of the lounge door before going back up the wall and around the kitchen door before it reaches it's destination in the corner of the lounge.

So obviously it looks rubbish having cables going around the frame of all the doors but what can i do to change this?

Sure i could run it under the carpet near the skirting boards but the cable crosses over 3 door entrys so the cable would have to run under a carpet across the door ways which i'm sure wouldn't be ideal.

So i was just wondering if anyone had any bright ideas?

You can cut the underlay carpet back slightly and fix the telephone cable in between the carpet gripper and the underlay, no good if you haven't got underlay though. If that's the case then do what electrician or plumber do by lifting floorboards up. Sometime you can get away with it by lifting the carpet away from the skirting board and carefully push the cable under the skirting with a blunt tool if there is enough gap.

Thanks for that, a few problems with your idea though.

It doesn't solve the problem of passing open doorways and 2ndly and more important......................concrete floors :(

you didnt mention concrete floors, hes good but hes not a mind reader!

How about a cordless phone? We have one telephone point and 4 phones and it works realy well, especially as the kids love to answer the phone but now they can bring it to you instead of calling you to it!

Don't bet on it for long ! You will end up looking for it, that if you can find it

yep modern technology fet yourself a nice new dect phone the sound quality is brilliant and all you need is one telephone socket the others only need a power point for the charger

It's a good point, but if I can't find any of them I get the kids to use that self-pager button so all the phones beep for about 20 seconds, then I tell the kids that if all the phones aren't back in their sockets by the time I count to ten they are sleeping in the shed for a week![/quote]

First up sorry thermo for not mentioning the concrete floors consider my hand duly slapped.

The cordless phone idea is sound but it won't work because my Sky Plus needs a socket to plug into and at the moment it's in the box in the lounge.

Do you have one of these in your door way, if so you can hide the wire inside it.

Yes i've seen many of those but they're not much use when attaching a phone line

could you re-route the cable externally, leaving main socket in hall and running on outside of property to get to lounge...

I'm afraid not the area it needs to travel is right slap bang in the middle of the house.

I will say nothing is impossible if you really want to do it.

Use a angle grinder joint in the floor screed between door opening maybe then buried the wiring in it. A very messy and dusty job though.
