What Could I Do Next?

get yourself a youngster or 2 to train up and then use them to do the donkey work, then eventually move onto a more passive role of going out to quote jobs, do the calcs and drawings etc.. basically start a firm.. with you as the gaffer..

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys.

Already worked in B & Q in the 80's...

Cannot do too much driving around.

Pete: was S/E prior to October 2005, but have been PAYE since then.

Numerical, LABC sounds good!

Employed by council, should be secure.

And a role that uses my brain (knowledge of regulations), rather than my (rapidly depleting!) brawn.

In this day-an-age you’re unlikely to get a managerial post in the public sector without a degree of some sort, sadly, regardless of your experience/competence.

What are your in house promotion prospects?

Unless I want to be a manager, not much, really. I don't want to be a manager....

I'm confused

To get off the tools you will have to be a "manager" of some sort which will mean you will have to manage something/someone.

Really consider teaching. I teach at university (nothing to do with electrics) and the students do appreciate having someone who has done the job and got their hands dirty. Confidence comes through doing; no good waiting for confidence to come first. Don't worry, colleagues will help and you'll be amazed how supportive are the students. Best of luck.

large demand for meter installers at moment and will get bigger in a couple of years when smart meters start to be installed, ok maybe a bit boring but clean, easy work and can make decent money.

That is so patronising.

And that is so insulting

how are either of those posts patronising or insulting?

he's asking for advice on what carrer to go for next that doesn't involve climbing into lofts or scrabbling about under floors..

teachers who have practical ecperience in the subject they are teaching will be able to pass on that experience better than someone who's only read about it..

Pens, the above was in reply to your question, "What your in-house promotion prospects?"

I don't want to be a team manager (which is all I can be in my current job), so if I got a different job off the tools it would have to be outside of my current employ.

NHS, they employ electricians, mechanical fitters, all easy work and the guys I was trained by were ex tools or ex house bashers. The work is just maintatence, changing fitings, some install, basic electrical stuff. Oh and the occasional 6month PIR that gets done. Most of them were retirement age when I was there and was just after an easy life from industry or house bashing. You are based on one site with the surrounding community to serve as well. It would be **** easy work for someone like you.

Heck I remember one morning on a Sat I was in to discon a peace of gear from a FCU, tripple pay!

Worth a shot.
