I know that there are loads of products on the market for supposedly keeping cats out of your garden, but is there anything in particular that's likely to work - apart from shooting them!

I'm fed up of them all using my flower bed as a toilet!

I've got one of these ultrasonic cat repellant things but it's difficult to place it where it's not being activated constantly by people walking by and birds and it goes through batteries like nobody's business.

Somebody said citronella oil but I'm not sure what to get and how to apply it.

buy a cat, they protect their own ground

seriously i hate the things and have the same problem as yourself. i've managed to reduce the amount of fur visitors in my garden by doing a few things, put some sharp gravel in one of the flower beds they use to do their business on, planted a few hawthorn bushes next to the wall they use to walk along and jump into the garden (they don't like getting pricked by the bush  ) and lastly borrow a dog for a week that hates cats ;)

If I'm honest, I hate cats myself but I don't want to harm them (and I definitely don't want one!)

The cats round here are as hard as nails though - I've got two dogs that hate cats and the dogs do not phase the cats in the slightest - they just sit there pawing their noses at the dogs. I have to cat check before I can let the dogs out because I know that if it came down to it, the dogs would come off worst.

If it was my dogs fouling in people's gardens, killing things and sleeping on cars, I'm sure there would be uproar!!!

Yes yes yes, its been done to death load’s of times on here, there is nothing you can do that is guaranteed to work, what works for one cat won’t work for another etc apart from move to somewhere where you don’t have neighbours within about 2 miles that is. Even getting your own cat is no guarantee, I can vouch for that!
Some people look at dogs and they’re owners with contempt. At least cats don't kill babies etc.

Geez, I didn't want to cause a "them and us" riot between cat and dog owners. I don't want to murder the cats - just keep them out of my garden and stop them crapping everywhere.

It's a personal opinion that it annoys me that cats can go where they want and do what they want because they're cats but every other pet is expected to be under control.

And cats can and do kill babies by lying on their faces and smothering them - but as trazor says it's neglegence on the human's part if a human comes to harm whilst in the company of an animal.

Trazor is right, it is the owners responsiblity but can you substanciate your claim that cats can smother babies? I was under the impression that was an urban mith.

I would never have thought a 12 volt battery would cause more than a bit of a buzz - but it shows what I know about batteries! Brings me onto thoughts of electric fences - should an electric fence have an ordinary fence in front of it? Only ask because at the end of my friend's road there are fields with electric fences round (horses in the fields) and there isn't anything between the pavement and the fence. We found out they were electric when one of my friend's dog sniffed the grass verge, touched the fence and got a shock!

I think you're right about the 12 volt cat deterrent. The story seems riddled with unlikely statements.

If you can have stuff growing over every available piece of ground, the cats may go elsewhere. What sort of plants are in your flower beds? Can you post photos?

A couple of geraniums (not the ones that are normally in patio pots and only last a season), saxifrage (sorry if I've spelt it wrong), campanula, snow in summer, aubretia, one that I can't remember what it's called, but it's an alpine, crawls for miles and has blue flowers on it and pansies and nemesia

I'll take pics but please be kind - I am no Alan Titchmarsh!

I have found that a good way to deter cats is with human urine. I was plagued with cats a while ago and I had heard a story about a guy living in the woods in Canada. He had been bothered by bears stealing food from his camp so he tried marking all the trees around the camp with urine. I thought I would give it a go with an old bucket to save any complaints form the neighbours. I found it highly effective.

I haven't tried that, but then I can't say I've noticed any bears in the garden.

Well I have stopped them coming in my garden. Entry was over a wall I built, so I decided to put that anti intruder paint on top, stopped them straight away, classical conditioned them, they must have hated that in their paws and claws

comercial electric fences are limited dishcharge ones..

they pulse the voltage down them giving ample time to move away after the initial jolt

the available amperage from them is also limited to a few miliamps...
