Hello.
I want a area of my garden to be virtually maintenance free.
I just had a landscaper to look at it and give a price etc. He talked about using chippings instead of hardcore and said after it was whacked down you can diesel it to make it set. I cant remember if he said tar chippings. Is this right ?

Only solid concrete asphalt or tarmac are pretty maintainence free. Eveb gravel will need weedkiller applied once or twice a year.

I have no idea what he means by 'dieseling' it and pray it doesn't involve actual diesel, i have never come across any form of chippings that have these magic binding properties he talks of? To be honest he sounds like a *****, was he recommended?

Yeah he actually meant spread diesel on it and it sets.
He wasnt recommended I looked for a local person in the yellow pages.
He had quite a large professional looking advert.
I have a Fence and locked gate at the side of the house to stop people wondering in and taking stuff like the natural stone flags someone robbed in broad daylight. Anyway when he was going he went to pull the gate handle and i had locked it out of habit, He said "oh its locked" I said yeah I always keep it locked to stop ****** robbing stuff out of the garden. He said something like "I need to get the van signed I look like a ***** its just been repainted". lol
I would be there while the work was being done and doing some of it, so I could at least see I wasn't being taken for a ride and got my moneys worth.
Im just not sure about these chippings but he did offer to show me a similar job he had done .
It will only have normal usage nothing heavy.

Ive seen this done in some ares. Tarmac scalpings are laid down then diesel sprinkled over them which softens the tarmac, then they are rolled or wackered. When the diesel has evaporated/ soaked in the scalpings harden up again. Smells of diesel for ages, not very nice, youll be trailing diesel/tarmac round on you boots for weeks.

Thats it. Tarmac scalpings is what he said.
Does this work ? If it does Im not too bothered about the smell as long as it goes away.

it works, its normally used on rough tracks or unadopted roads to give a more even surface or areas to park cars on. Suppose it matters what depth the scalpings are put down at and what the ground underneath is like.

Thanks for that, I was rather sceptical but it sounds like its suitable for what I need.

I would find someone else. Get someone recommended. MANY people have trod that path, and regretted it.

If you want tarmac, get a tarmaccer. They'll know what do do, and how to do it properly! May cost a bit more (but who knows), but in the long run it'll probably save you having to do it again.

Any idiot can place a big advert - don't get impressed by this.

i suspect hes talking about using road plannings. These are cheap and its an old ***** trick to lay them and bind them up with some diesel to reactivate some of the bitumen. It will look crap. it will smell crap. it wont last.

get a decent landscaper, hes not that. If you dont know what hes talking about, then how is you standing there going to make any difference, as you wont know what hes doing. You may as well walk down the road and throw your cash away

Yes I think thats what he meant. Nothings been agreed as to exactly whats getting put down as yet. There is a lot of clearing to do first.
Based on what I already understand and the good advice I have been given here. I think I'll just get him to do the clearing. ;)

Thanks.

I wouldn't let him even do that. If you feel comfortable then go ahead, but if you have the slightest doubt, forget it.

Don't let him back into you life - you're only asking for trouble.

dont even waste your time or money on that. get someone decent in to do it.

Chances are that he'll do a rough job and flytip the lot anyway, and use your cash to put an even bigger ad in yell.
