Hi all,

Just wondering how how plasterers are finding it in todays economic climate, are they getting much work? I guess I'm most interested in self employed plasterers as thats what I'm interested in doing.

Basically I have a full time job so would only be able to do plastering jobs at the weekend and in the evening. Assuming I'm at a professional standard how many jobs could I expect to get if I put an advert in the paper and get listed on the internet etc?

Anyone in this position? Do you get more work than you can handle or is it a case of getting 1 job every few months?

Cheers,

Are you a plasterer or in a completely different line of work? Therefore you could only plaster at weekends.

As far as I'm concerned there is much less work at the moment and we get plenty of site plasterers calling up to see if we need extra men. I don't know how the other spreads are fixed but work is pretty thin on the ground. As far as how many jobs you could do in a weekend as a pro, well thats impossible to say. Some jobs can be completed in a couple of hours or many weeks. There are plenty of plasterers around who are struggling for work, and there are probably many with plenty on. One more question have you plastered much in the past? Or are you learning the ropes?

Thanks for the reply.

I work in an unrelated job so yes I could only plaster on weekends and in the evening.

Basically I did a 12 week plastering course and since then I've plastered quite a few of the walls in my house and I've done a couple of jobs for family members, so I'm still fairly inexperienced but I feel like I achieve a good finish now.

I'd probably like a little more practice before I put an advert out there though. I guess I'm just trying to work out if its even worth continuing really, or whether theres just too much competition these days.

Cheers.

No competition for decent plasterers.

Only competition is between the muppets and wannabes.

That say's it all for me. Skilled, experienced plasterers don't/shouldn't even have to advertise either,, it's mostly all word of mouth.

not always accurate to be honest, you can be the best (insert trade here) but new or even have moved areas,

either way you need to advertise, plus in this climate only a fool doesnt advertise, it dont matter how good you are and how recommended you are there are only a certain amount of jobs for you at the min.

are you that rich or not interested in work that you only want the recommendation ones?

thought not.

I do not advertise Jeff, and i drive around in a plan white van,,, no name on it. If you move to a different area, or you are just starting out,, then maybe you have to start from somewhere, so advertising might be ok, but for an established one man band, in a small area, i am lucky enough to get work without advertising. There are other tradesmen in the area who are in the same position. I am listed in the Yellow Pages with a minimum name and address advert under Plasterers and Screeders,, but that's it. and remember, it doesn't take much, to keep one person (me) busy.

thats fine for you i guess if ti keeps you busy enough

i personally do advertise, i get referalls also, im happy to pay the money to keep the work coming in

Recommendation by word of mouth is obviously the best way to get business, but if you want new unrelated business to expand as we do then you choose some form of advertising. Last year for us 70% new business through advertising 30% through word of mouth.

Hmmmm maybe thats not so good
