Whilst I am fully in agreement with saving energy and recycling I am getting most concerned at the lies we are are being told. If we added up all the carbon we are adding to the atmosphere the earth would not exist.
The EU is now banning proper light bulbs and the Government is telling that this will save 5 million tons of carbon a year, everyone who takes a long distance flight add 1.5 tons, every power station adds tons, and not longer ago we were told that if we charge our phones on solar power we save 1 million tons a year. Where the hell is all this carbon? the first rule of science states "matter can be neither created nor destroyed" so all this carbon we are saving must be somewhere.

Biggest con of the decade, we are all being put on a guilt trip, and have to pay for the privilege.
Tungsten filament light bulbs being phased out in favour of the more efficient CFL's, what has happened to freedom of choice, who pays the bill if they continue to use (out of choice) filament lamps...the consumer!
Sooner we get away from the EU, the better we will be, petty dictators
imposing things we don't want.

Light bulb manufacturers will make a fortune out of this legislation, wind turbine and solar panel makers ect. are lobbying the EU to pass laws that will force ordinary people to buy their products, it is all done under the guise of "saving the planet" ;)

I too fully support energy saving and the recycling (or better still, reuse) of materials.

I don't support the mass delusion of man-made global warming theories and the consequent authoritarian measures by bureaucrats to impose yet more taxes and restrictions on us.

It seems there are proposals now to tax householders who don't have government-approved levels of insulation: see here.

Hi Everyone
I would like to see and end to built in redundancy and failure. Lightbulbs that last for instance without a built in failure rate.
Between family, friends and colleagues the amount of household items that we go through is appalling.
Hoovers, toasters, kettles , washing machines, dryers etc. all seem to fail within no time (usually just beyond the statuary guarantee period).
More durable goods would also help the rubbish mountain and landfill problems we have.
The cost to the environment of the car scrappage scheme with the manufacture of all those new cars far outweighs the benefits of a few old bangers on the road.
I heard another numpty on the radio asking the government for a similar scrappage scheme for fridges and freezers.
Imagine the cost of disposing of all those appliances and manufacturing new ones.
Profit Profit Profit methinks.
G.

The theory behind insulating homes seems ridiculous to me, i am just completing a loft conversion at our house where we've insulated the roof to meet Building Regulations requirements and i'm sure this will be lovely in winter, but this summer (and its hardly been a scorcher!) it is obscenely hot in the loft, we've not shut the windows since March and have now had to buy fans to cool the house down which are running for hours each day when the sun shines. I've heard of new build offices saying that the cost of running air con systems is greater than the cost of heating their old premises so surely the carbon output from these cooling machines outweighs the reductions made by reducing the heating required?

Totally agree with you OhGranny, all product these days are basically disposable and have no build quality at all. You buy something and if it packs up (like you say) the week after the gaurantee runs out you just accept that thats how long things last now, knowing that if you get it repaired, something else will go wrong with it before long so its a waste of time?

perhaps we could use it for pencils

The more insulation you have the cooler it will be.

I can totally see why that makes sense; so why is it so hot in our house since doing the loft conversion, particularly in the loft? We previously had 50-75mm of very old, dirty and squashed loft insulation, nothing at rafter level and have no wall insulation?

Because it`s always been hot in lofts  That`s why everyone wants a Gas safe installed Combi... "I got a degree an` a Gas Safe card- I`m not going in a roof void" Also the plasterers used to leave " presents" on the tank stillages for us plumbers

I don't know, it doesn't make sense.
Maybe your house gains a lot of heat from the sun, which used to disperse through the ceiling into the loft. Now it stays in the house.
Maybe you haven't turned the heating down yet.

Maybe you've blocked up the eaves ventilation to your loft with all your new insulation.
Even though it'll get really hot in the loft during the day, if it's properly vented, it will cool down again at night.

Maybe it goes the same place all that water goes when the icecaps melt.

Put some ice in a glass.Fill it tothe brim with water and leave it to let the ice melt.Does it overflow????

Does it furk

I guess the heat comes through the windows and can now no-longer get out so it gets hot

flawed logic there. the majority of the threatened melt is not currently below water level like your ice in a glass scenario.
