I have a brand new Ikea kitchen table with a polyurethane/acrylic laqueur on a solid beech surface.

We want to take off the lacquer and stain it black (with relaquering).

Any help would be gratefully received !

Thanks

Commercial mass-produced furniture is often finished nowadays in two-pack finishes which are very hard to remove. You could try a chemical stripper, but a heat gun would be more likely to succeed.

However, the labour involved is hardly worthwhile. Ikea furniture is not a such a high quality (with all due respect) that it's worth spending much time on; tabletops for example are often lightweight sandwiches with little real wood in them.

If you don't like the look of it, I suggest selling it and buying something which fits better with your decor.

You could try spraying it with black car paint then over-spraying that with clear lacquer.

if you only want to refinish the top then don't try to strip it, just plane it off, sand it flat and refinish. If you going to do the legs etc as well then don't bother, 2 pac laquer is hard to strip well.
