Does anybody here collect, or have an interest in, old woodworking tools?

Or know of any good sites which discuss them?

I've inherited a few moulding planes, and I'd like to find out about them - age, quality, rarity, value etc.

You see loads in the auctions, but they don't fetch much.

The Tools and Trades History Society is an excellent source of all kinds of hand tool knowledge.

Useful books are: W L Goodman, British Planemakers from 1700 (ISBN 0713507683) and R A Salaman, Dictionary of Tools used in the Woodworking and Allied Trades 1700-1950 (ISBN 0046210202).

As far as determining value goes, try David Stanley Auctions.

Moulding planes were made in large numbers and don't in themselves have particular rarity or high value, unless they are from especially interesting makers or in substantial sets. However, they can often be beautiful and fascinating tools.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not expecting these to be my path to retirement on my own Caribbean island, or even in a timeshare caravan on the Isle of Sheppey, but they are of no use to me, and I just want to know if it's worth the aggro of trying to sell them.
