Out of curiosity, how much water do you need per bag? I always got taught up to my second knuckle on my middle finger...but that kinda goes out of the window if you use different size buckets

thanks again

It's more about the final consistancy, usually about the same as double cream.... Or once you bring the paddle out about an inch depression where it was, if that makes sence, you might like to work with it stiffer, or runnier - as yo prefer.

Plaster should be added to clean bucket filled with clean water (as you may prob already know).

As a DIYer I'm not quick compared to the Pros, so I've tried a slightly different way - as I can't get through a full bag of multi-finish on my own before it goes off.

so I start with about 5L water and then mix about third to half a bag up. I then add a bit more once it's mostly mixed and repeat until I get a consistency I'm happy with. I use an electric mixer so can hold in one hand and pour the additional in. I've even resorted to a large food scoop in the past to save the back!

I can then usually spread it with minimum waste and less rush. Usually means I'm using two mixes to do my two coats on largish walls, but I feel more confident that way and as it's DIY, my time is not quite so important.

But that's just me.
As I get more confident I'll prob mix more with bigger walls and try for the full bag!
They need a plasterer's equivalent of the Blue Peter badge when you can spread a full bag with good results before it goes off! :)

Hi Newbie!

i'm up to a full bag in one go now :D helps working off a spot board though i have to say, mix up enough for first application, lay it on quick, go back and flatten it then wait for it to pull in a bit and firm up, then mix second application, half as much as first, seems to be working well for me right now, except that is when wickes CRAP PVA has me over a barrell.

only used it yesterday, did first set using wickes PVA and it went of unevenly and quickly in places, was hard to get it flat in time and wasn't quite as good as i'd have liked it.

went onto 2nd set which had a better PVA on it and they went on lovely, same backgrounds, same paint on the backgrounds, only difference was the PVA, other spread with me (was a stairwell so didn't want to tackle it on my own) was in doubt that it was the PVA.

anyway, been and got 10ltrs of unibond red from screwfix this morning  looking forward to seeing how it goes, i'll let you know.

Many thanks all, this site has been a massive help and i'm sure will prove so for many more times!
