I have a really mucky family. Huge dog/kids etc. Our hall walls get a real hammering. I am thinking of redecorating with some ordinary matt paint emulsion and then paint over it with a clear matt varnish? Would this work?thanks lots

Not really. You are better off using a kitchen paint that is tough and washable.

Wilkos do a really good kitchen paint that is dead tough but dead flat (won't show up wobbly walls).

try using vinyl silk as this is wipeable.there is no logic in using matt and varnish.and will cost much more money, and take twice as long. simon the builder

You could use exterior emulsion or pliolite based masonry paint, wouldnt do any harm but would be tough.
