Hi all.
I can plaster in a fashion, but my son has just ripped his ceiling down due to heavy artex from previous owner.
I was going to reboard and tape the joints and re-skim the whole lot, but had an idea to just skim the joints before applying emulsion.
My friend suggested just using decorators caulk to fill the joints (no joint tape).....what is the way forward???.
Need quick replies as its "D" day this saturday.
Thanks for all answers..in advance.

Tape and skim the whole lot - you know in your heart of hearts it's the proper choice.

Whatever you do don't take your mates advice. You'll have crack lines opening up for years.

if you stick tapered edge boards up there you can have a go at taping and jointing it, BG sell boards with 4 tapered edges which have big advantages when doing a ceiling.

still think a skim is best though, depend son the size of it and your skill level i suppsoe

What your asking is, is there any easy way to solve this problem and unfortunately like most things in life there isn't. If this was a reasonable solution I guarentee that every plasterer in the country would be doing it and their not so I think that answers the question.

You need to do it properly. It will take a few more hours but in the long run it will be worth it. :D

key to my reply was his decision to do this himself and his admission that 'i can plaster in a fashion'

Using no tape & caulking is really bad advice; it will crack all to hell & back. You could tape & fill taper edge boards as TM suggests but it will probably be visible & nowhere near as hardwearing; an OK finish for office blocks & shops but not in a domestic situation IMO.

Do it properly or get someone in who can; square edge boards, tape & skim.

It's a while since I've seen such a unanimous post!

Just for the benefit of my 4p worth....I would tape boards & skim also. :D

Tapered edge boards and filling may appear to be quicker but by the time you've waited for it to dry, sanded (the dust gets everywhere) it can take a long time.

Skiming Plasterboard is simple stuff, it doesn't get much easier in a plasterers world.

yup, that is a MASSIVE downside of taping and jointing, the sanding!! hideous job and a nightmare to clean up.

skimming is better than tape and jointing anyway.i have had to overskim lots of times.where the joins on the jointing are not neat. simon the spread/builder
