Hi, seen a car only 1 year old that has been cat d repaired..seems pretty cheap...my question is that when it is cat d repaired by a approved garage do they issue a certificate to say the car is roadworthy or should I get a independant engineer AA or RAC to do a full check on it and do they give me a certificate to validate its roadworthy??

personally would not one with a barge pole.they are never the same after a major prang.had a escort that i had that someone hit me,bought it after insurance wrote it of and i think the chassis was bent a bit it.it didnt drive the same.also suspension was suspect.also they are harder to sell on aswell.just look for a car with low milage.and service history and m.o.t .hope this helps simon

Hi just wanted to add something .
I was looking for a mercedes c36 amg , i looked at various models but could not find one that i liked.
i then found a cat d for alot less it was half price/
the damged that was caused was minor front and rear bumpers cracked!!
the parts for the things are stupid expensive hence they wrote its off.
do your home work and as long as it has a vosa cert to say that it has been re mot'd then there is no reason why you cant buy and get a bargain.
people who tell you to stay away probably don't understand the differance between the cats..
hope this helps

A Cat D write off isnt to bad it can be for many reasons. From something simple like windows smashed to having a small ish crash.

They are repairable and ok to use again. Thing you have to remember insurance companys write things off very easy as the repair places charge them top whack to do jobs.

For eg about 6 month ago my mate bought a Pug 106 with both side and rear windows smashed and radio had been stollen. Cost £300 to buy, got the glass off ebay think it was about £70 ish had a old radio knocking about to put in it. Give it a good clean up and sold it for £850. Would actually make a good little first car for someone.

Just be carefull what you buy its not all doom and gloom
