As this cable is normally used for a single 2 way light circuit (other than 3 phase use) is 1mm square OK

to provide two-way switching, at least that's what i thought he meant.

DO NOT use for 3 phase 400 v.

Yes, only for 2 way switching of domestic lights fed from 6amp RCBO

not for a flexible link to a machine itself, but a feed from the CU to a 3 phase switch or small socket it's viable..

Use the same size cable as the rest of the circuit.

Somebody will come along and say that that may not be necessary for a switchline. But 3 core cable sometimes carries a neutral or permanent live and in any case, use the same size cable as the rest of the circuit.

Surely as long as the cable is OK for the MCB rating it doesn't matter if it's not the same as used in other parts of the circuit?

In the future someone might want to increase the protection to 16A, and not realise that one part of the circuit has been done in 1mm.
True.

But this person who has increased a lighting MCB to an unconventional size without checking the cables might also not realise that some of them are IM 103, and therefore even 1.5mm² could not go on a 16A breaker.

All circuits should be continuous and the same size cable throughout.
And all done in sizes which assume the worst-possible derating case, just in case an idiot should ever want to fiddle with them.

Good luck with your 6mm² ring finals.

Oh hang on - I'd forgotten that some of them are bunched together where they run up through thick insulation between two floors - better make that ring final 16mm²....
