Hi folks, neighbours are making an extension, replacing a fence with their wall.
All well and good, but i'm looking at the construction of the wall and am a bit worried.
The rest of their victorian house is double layered brick.
It has withstood direct attack by scaffolding poles and wayward wheelbarrow cornersloaded with 100 kg of rubble.

This new wall looks like a single karate kick will crack it.

Are current building regs really this poor and shoddy?

Can i insist they reinforce it somehow, and if not i have the right to order their brickies of my land so they can finish the job right?
I assume any damage will have to be paid for by me, bit unfair if u ask me!

You're saying you want your neighbours to reinforce their wall so you can bash wheelbarrows into it and hit it with scaffold poles?

I assume any damage will have to be paid for by me, bit unfair if u ask me!

If it were my wall you damaged then damn right I'd get you to pay for the repair.

No you numpty i'm saying that theres a fair amount of 'heavy traffic' that is liable to pass by in future, and not every labourer comes to work without a hangover.

Why do you care so much about their wall?
It is their build therefore their responsability after all......

Freddy - the fact that the same guy wrote the above and you cant see the inherent contradiction contained therein means you're just about smart enuff to spot a missing comma.

Nope, I still don't really know what it is you're asking. Has it still not occurred to you that you've had so few useful replies for a reason?

Right, was a fence, now a wall.
You're worried about the construction of your neighbours wall.

The rest of their victorian house is double layered brick.

Presume you mean the rest of their house is of double skin cavity construction?

It has withstood direct attack by scaffolding poles and wayward wheelbarrow cornersloaded with 100 kg of rubble.

What has? The old fence or their victorian house?

This new wall looks like a single karate kick will crack it.

It may do if it's single skin and not tied into anything; but what's the likelihood of that happening? Is the wall even finished yet?

Are current building regs really this poor and shoddy?

No, they're usually overkill. Do you know for sure your neighbours have contacted building control?

Can i insist they reinforce it somehow, and if not i have the right to order their brickies of my land so they can finish the job right?

This just doesn't make any sense at all.

Please make clear my inherent contradiction as I am utterly confused.

Judging by this post
Am having an extension built
it seems you are having an extension built as well. Does this bear any relevance to this post?

To help calm the situation here, you are a little unclear in your post but I think I get you....

The new wall is made from a single skin of grey blocks? Are you sure that is so and not that you cant see a second skin?

Either:

its the inner skin, and there should be an outer one emerging with it pretty soon

its the outer skin and presumably it will be rendered (hopefully for you!)

its the only skin, and the extension might be a bit cold for them.

Regs usually are overkill, as stated above, so I would imagine (I am not a builder, btw) it should be a dbl skin....

As a general principle though, have you spoken to your neighbours about it first? If you really feel it is unsafe you have the right to talk to BCO yourself though you have to consider your relationship with your neighbour too - try chatting about it first with him. There MIGHT be a good explanation........

I'm really not here to bicker, overelaborate or nosey through peoples other posts, so...

Can we agree then that a flemish bond wall will beat the c**p out of a breeze, butterfly and brick veneer wall if they met in a pub carpark.

thats the nuts of the issue,

thanks all.

I don't really see the relevance of this tyo the OP........ please enlighten me. :D

Are you missing the point that one is a cavity wall and the other solid?
Which would you rather have.....

actually forget I even asked.
