HELP !!! GOT A NASTY SHOCK

D

dpj1973

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Had quite a nasty electric shock today....

Fitting a washer in our home, unfortunately i got my hands quite wet fitting the water feed, it started to leak so i tried to tighten it and the unit and it was plugged in (had to be plugged in becuase of position first)...not wise, im aware of this, in fact rather stupid!!...like taking a right hand from joe calazghe.

I isolated the electric etc, thought it might have been the washer, it wasnt. Tested the socket it was plugged into and the earth wire has a VERY strong current flowing though it. Put a voltmeter on in and it went straight to 400 and something ? very strange, i know.

I thought perhaps that some other sockets/switchs might be the same so i checked the screws on the outside, as i was a little nervous  . Some read a very small voltage, only just registering, others non at all.

Any idea what could be causing this or a possible solution? Seems some of the earths have somehow become live, but others not

Could you tell us what tester you have and which test method you used please. Will help to identify possible causes.

It sounds like a faulty socket at first, but more info is needed.

:-/ im probably going to sound quite stupid now. ...sorry

The reading isnt digital, is basically six red l.e.d's that light up, indicating volatge and buzzes. It goes straight to the top when one of the two contacters is in contact with the earth on this socket

Ive taken the back box off and made contact directly with the earth wire and it goes wild.

On some of the other sockets/light switch screws it makes a very slight buzzing and the first light comes in and out. Basically some of the earths are live, others not.

As there is two leads can you place one on a known good earth and the other on the suspect socket?

wow, thanks for your input goldberg ! Call an electrician, good thinking.

Any other top tips? If you have an head-ache, take a tablet...that kind of thing.

I have an idea, if everyone with a problem called an expert, we wouldnt even need forums like this, thus erradicating annoying prats like your-self giving pointless advice.

Where you off to next? The chiropodist to tell people they need their feet looking at.

Unless you own the correct test equipment and are familiar in it's use then I'm afraid you have little choice. The effectiveness of your earthing system needs inspecting/testing

given that this is a potentially life threatening problem, do you not think it a good idea to seek professional help?

would you go and ask a neighbour what might be wrong and how to fix it if you were vomiting blood, or call an ambulance?
would you seek the guidance of the local vicar if you had a strong smell of gas in your house, or call out the gas people?

so knowing that you think you have a fault where there is live voltage on an earth wire, you seek information from strangers on the internet rather than call in someone who could physically check what's going on and either put your mind at ease or rectify the fault..

jesus, why do you people come on here ???

I i were vomiting blood? Vicar? smell of gas? what the hell are you talking about. Are you somehow suggesting electricians are just as important as doctors? Vomitting blood as serious as a 240v shock? No offence to sparkies.

I have an electrical problem, ive posted a question on an electrical forum!

Yes i probably should call an electrician, but you dont need to be batman to work out i didnt want to do that yet. I wanted to see if it was a simple problem to fix, which it has turned out to be !!!!

If everyone with an electrical problem called an electrician then there wouldnt be a need for this forum you goon. Which begs the question ' if thats the way you think what are you doing here' ?

Do you prowl the forums looking for unsuspecting people seeking advice, telling them to call an expert and not take advice off strangers. Christ, i bet your sat at home in your batman cape

ricicle, fair enough, you have a point. The other two, please, give advice or go somewhere else....

Im gas engineer ;) 3/4 of the work i do can be done by the village idiot.

Th electric problem has now been fixed. The idiot who wired the socket has taken it from a junction box under the floor boards and the earth was touching the live, very poor fixing.

Everyone who offered advice, thanks, appreciated. The other two....if you dont think people should mess with electrics then what are you doing here? DIY....'do it yourself' ....the clues in the wording ;)

oh good, while you're here then..

I have to fit a gas hob, but my plumber is not avaiable for a few weeks and I'm fed up of waiting..
can you talk me through connecting it up.. step by step?

the pipe is already there and only about 6 inches from where the hob connection will be..

I'm not a gassafe registered installer, but as it's my own home and not for proffit I can do it by law..
and I don't have any leak detection equipment, but I do have some washing up liquid so I can check for bubbles..

Hello DPJ1973,

I have a hissing sound and a odd smell near my cooker.

The missus keeps complaining of headaches and a 'tight feeling' in her chest whenever she has spent the day at home.

Ive heard that gas explosions can be quite dangerous, but are they as bad as vomiting blood?

I know a painter and decorator lives down the road from me, he says he can fit a new boiler for £3000, but the only problem is he says he can't test the gas supply at the moment as he has run out of candles.

Do you think if i get my own candles, or even just a cigarette lighter, i'll be able to fit the boiler myself?
After all, if i save £3000 on boiler fitting, i can go shopping at the weekend for some new plasma TV's which i feel are far more important.

Please don't be rude to me, i only want to save some money for the nice things in life.
