turned on pc today and this came up..

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency
you make cancel the disk check, but it's strongly recommended
that you continue

it give me 10 seconds to cancel if I wanted, but I let it do the checks
this is what came up..

CHKDSK is verifing files ( stage 1 of 3

Deleting corrupt attribute record ( 128 "" )

from file record segment 65608

107251

111114

File verification completed

CHKDSK is verifing files ( stage 2 of 3 )

then this comes up... correcting error in index $o for file 25

any ideas guys..... do I need to down load anything to fix the problem..

thanks again for any help.

sounds like there is a bad sector on your harddrive. you must let chkdsk (check disk) go through the motions as it will then know where the bad sector is and then not write to that part again.

hi..

I left it for about 25 mins, but nothing happened the last bit of writing was correcting error in file $o for file 25

nothing seemed to be happening so I turned off pc and restarted it, should I of just left it ?

it depends on the size of your harddrive and how much info is on it. did it start up ok? if it did you can still run chkdsk within widows to be on the safe side. which windows are you running?

I not got a clue what size it is, it started up ok once I canceled the checks

the windows is XP ..thats all I know :)

ok do this:
click START, then click RUN, a box will now appear so type in CMD and click ok. the original box will close and another bigger one will open with white text on a black background. now type in CHKDSK and press RETURN and it will check your disk. after it has finished it will tell you if you have any errors. to fix the errors it will need to reboot into pure DOS and to do this you must tell it to CHKDSK/F press RETURN and then the prompt will ask you if you want it to be run when the pc is restarted. type Y then press RETURN and close the box. restart your pc and wait for it to finish.

hi toffeenick

done as you said, then pressed the restart tab, it shut down then it restarted but seemed just to freeze, on the screen was the name of the pc and had writing on the bottom saying to run the page press del and to see ( forgot what it said ) press tab..

so turned it off at mains, but it still had the same problem with the CHKDSK saying file 25.

any thing I done wrong, or is there something else I can do to sort it.

many thanks

when it restarted it should have asked you if you wanted to continue or press any key to not let it run. did it?

it can take hours to run, maybe overnight

when I've had it it is usually an indication that the disk is on the way out, so if I were you I would buy a new disk and start copying you data across

if the PC starts working before you have time to buy a new hard drive, copy your photos and other valued files onto CDs, or use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (All programs, Accessories, System Tools)

yer it said that...so I pressed any key.

now I cant use youtube.. the vids dont play, it's just a black screen where the vid should be.
and cant play the free games on pc, is it something to do with the flash player.? I've got the adobe flash player 10 activeX

one more thing when I was doing the stuff you said about the CHKDSK it said .. CHKDSK cannot continue in read only mode :?:

thanks again :)

That's normally the error seen when the OS is fully loaded. Are you sure it ran from startup (before Windows loaded)?

If you have an xp disk, boot from that into the recovery console, then perform chkdsk /p /r (you can't do this from windows). Its a deeper method of scanning and fixing many errors.
If you can do that and it boots back into windows, do what JohnD has suggested, BACKUP YOUR DATA.
Then do a disk defrag, and see if it has any real stubborn areas.
I'd also download HDDTune to check for disk defects....then check your wallet! :)

got the youtube vids working and games.. dont know how mind..lol

also set the security in the tool bar to medium, was on medium to high.

not sure if that efected stuff..

thanks again chaps :)

you've decided not to back up your data and buy a new disk then? :(
