Hi guys, yes its me again... :D

Right my mates mum has just had new double glazing and a new front door put in, which now means what used to be the porch is part of their hallway...

The old porch walls were pebble dash but not painted. My question is would it be better to bond then skim these rather than knock all the old pebbledash back to brick work. I considered boarding, but this would mean the walls would come out to far in comparison to the new windo seals....bit of a hard image to picture ey!!! I imagine i should still PVA as normal...

Also should i use some external render beads as the angle are pretty thick??? Oh and one more thing, above the door it is arched, so can you get beading to match this???

Right im going to shut up now, and hand it over to you guys....

Im a bit reluctant to do it, but it would be good practice for me, so any advice would be great thanks... :D

regards

Clark

Hi again Clarky, ;)

If the old pebbledash is sound, clean, and un-painted, give it a couple of coats of bonding plaster, the first coat,, enough to cover the dash + a thin top coat, let it set, then put on a couple of coats of multi finish. The key on an unpainted pebbledash wall is perfect, so you don't really need PVA, just give it a wet/damp down, then put on the 2 bonding coats,, allow the first one to steady up a half hour or so,, you'll know yourself, then put on the second coat.
You can buy plastic radius beads,, the smallest you'll get are 8' in length, but they're only a couple of quid each,, if that. Tell me more about the need for external render beads/thick angle? Do you mean angle, as in reveal,, meaning corner beading???

Hi there roughcaster,

Thanks for that, very helpful aint ya ;) .. Sorry yeh i do mean reveal. Where the pebble dash has been done all the reveals are pretty thick, so i just was not sure if there was a certain type of beading that i could use to get that nice pointed edge finish...am i making any sence.. lol

thanks mate..

Oh also i forgot to mention where they knocked the old wall out it has left about a 1/2inch step where it met the hallway wall... Now should i just bond this level, straght edge so its flat then skim over...or would this cause a crack in the plaster where it joins..i just dont want to have to skim the whole wall as i am doing it for free...I know I know, what a mug ey..haha

cheers mate

Just as you say in your post Clarky,,, but trim back the edge/s of the 1/2" step, and the edge of the hallway wall because they will probably "curl" slightly outwards. Just cut it back an inch or so,, gently, with a small bolster. Give the area a wet down with a brush, pva the edge/s of the step, and then coat it out flush with bonding plaster. I don't see it cracking where it joins the plaster on the hallway wall, if it's cleaned/dampened and pva'd,,,, well prepped.
