Anyone able to tell me what is a realistic radiator surface temperature. There is a lot of talk about rads getting hot enough - but what is hot enough ?

Cheers

Whatever is sufficient to get the room up to the desired temperature.

Is the surface temperature of a rad a good indication of the flow temp? or do the top of rads heat up and get hotter than the incoming flow ? is that even possible ?

Cheers

Is it best to have reall hot rads to get room to @ required temperature@ or is it more efficient to hav cooler rads doing things a bit slower ?

When thermal comfort reaches a state where people describe themselves as neither cool nor warm. Thermal neutrality in other words and the radiator may only need a mean temperature of 30c to acheive this or it may need 80c

Generally the accepted way to do it is have as low a flow temp as possible while still being able to achieve the required room air temperature, as this will consume the least gas. This is why weather compensation kits are available for modern boilers.

Personally I'd go for hot radiators, then the TRV's will keep the ambient temperature levelish.

It's a bit like asking whether, when boiling potatoes, how hot should the hob be to get the water to boiling. Fair enough, there are subsequent differences in the analogy when the water boils.

Eureka. - just painted a two inch length of pipe on the boiler flow and return. Straight away found that with the laser thermometer the difference between painted pipe and bare copper was more than 25oF. Not convinced with this type of measuring device , think I will invest in some clip on guages.

Yeah sorry long story - but started off by trying to balance rads. This was near impossible ( i think using laser thermometr on bare copper and painted pipes had big effect ) . when i thought i had got close i thought i would double check flow and return temps on boiler as i read all over that this is very important on a condenser. even on the flow the temp waqs massively lower than any radiator temp. so started questioning the whole measurement thing.
Really just trying to get the whole system set up to run at it's best.
I had some time back taken out a jumper on the pcb cos manual said this would up power of boiler ( could never get all rads hot ) but put that back today as now don'yt think it was right. and so on and so on.

You sound like someone who like to do things right. Fair enough.

How's the double garage going ;)

tee hee, yep been on this for a week. won't let it go. whole business seems a bit wooly to me - bit of a black art me thinks !

No chance of a garage mate. Heating bills are too high !

It is indeed , you need the secret Black Hand of the Artisan Plumber. Like by feeling the rads...You Know.... I`m proud to say I balanced 30 rads in one wing of a hotel, one Xmas with no gauges/thermometer etc.
