Just in the process of doing an extension to my kitchen and when digging out the foundations we have come across a bottle well.

We've been advised that we will need to clear it out (currently full of old bricks) and fill it with concrete to the level of the foundations.

Anybody got any idea how deep these things are and what would be the best method of clearing it?

No easy way I'm afraid. I've done a few over the years, quickest way is to have a bucket on a rope with one man in the well and one on the surface.

Fill the bucket, pull it up, empty it, lower the bucket..................

The deepest one I've come across was about 3.6 metres deep (12 feet approx).

You'll also need to clean out the mud/silt/sh*t etc from the bottom prior to concreting.

Not the nicest job in the world but somewhat character building ;)
