When I have central heating on, I will get this rattling noise that echoes through my pipes but will stop if I turn on a hot tap either in the bathroom or kitchen.

I also find that if I turn the knob attached to the radiator down from say 5 to 4 then back up to 5 again, it will stop but start up again intermitently.

I found myself staying awake all last night because everytime I started to drift to sleep it started and I had to go to the bathroom and turn the tap on! I ended up playing PS3 all night!

Please help me obi-wan, you are my only hope..!

what is the name of the big white box that gets hot with all the pipes sticking out of it?

Thanks for your reply.

Looking through the patrony of the post I assume you mean the big white thing with sticky out pipes is the boiler?!

For all those out there willing to post a more helpful reply, the model is a Ferroli Modena 80E.

Not all users of DYInot have experience in this field, please help a complete novice, not idiot.

Thanks in advance folks.

Unidirectional thermostatic radiator valves tend to chatter as they close if they have been fitted the wrong way round. The water flow should follow the direction of the arrow on the valve body.

Some bidirectional valves (often marked with double headed arrows) can chatter if the pressure differential across them is a bit high. Sometimes balancing the system can help, sometimes swapping them from return to flow (or vice versa) will cure it.

Sometimes turning the heating pump down a notch will cure it, providing it doesn't cause problems elsewhere in the system.

I wasnt trying to be patronising, just pointing out that a little bit of basic information does help in sorting out what your problem is.

Above post is correct, it's your thermostatic rad valves, turning on your tap moves your diverted valve away from Heating, stopping the clicking.

Bang on with the TRV's...the fact that the noise changes when you run the hot tap just means that the boiler heat is being directed away from the CH to the HW for the duration. Try turning the pump down.
John :)

Explained simply for you, your system seems to have TRVs on all the rads and should have an auto bypass valve.

With that boiler it was provbably installed by someone who did not understand the finer points of heating installation.

Cure1 Fit decent TRV's eg Danfoss
Cure 2 Find which valve is causing the noise. Remove head. Cut pin off with pliers. Replace non functional head.

The lower the cost of the boiler the greater the likelyhood of it being installed badly!

When did you ever see a Vizo fitted to a powerflushed system?

Tony

Never came across a Vizo but i don't fit Big and Q shyte.
Spent a weekend in the company of a Halstead rep who tried his best to convince me they were "actually quite good" boilers but most just fitted badly. (i did actually agree with him but wound him up anyway  )
If you only want to pay £400 for a boiler you can't expect a quality job!
