Hi folks i'm starting the 2391 course 3rd feb, 12 week night course and am wanting to get the right books to revise from.

I have the new regs already but this will be the 2nd time i'm sitting the course as i unfortunately failed last time out.

I have books from back then as testing and inspection aint changed since the 16th - 17th edition update but i'll ask anyways.

Therefore will guidence note 3 (16th edition) suffice or ought i make it redundant and get the 17th edition, will it make significant enough difference?

Also i'm thinking of getting 'Practical Guide to Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations' by chris james. Also i've got 16th edition on site guide but will get the 17th edition OSG. Any other books you folks recommend that will prove useful?

Ask course tutor. First time I started course we had notes because 16th had only just come out and I did not need any books. Changed jobs and course paid for by works so not completed.

Second just after BS7671:2001 came out and this time had to buy just book 3 all other bits provided.

So only person who can answer your question is course tutor.

The college i'm studying at suggest 2 books (on-site guide and regs). It's a brand new college and you can't even hire/loan any books from their library!(SHOCKING)! I'm definately going to buy the OSG 17th and already as mentioned before got the 17th regs. Started reading the NICEIC test and inspection book already which is a decent book but once again its what i was using last time and really the main question is do i need all my books updating from 16th to 17th edition?

I have a couple of hundred pounds worth of books already that i can study from, Brian Scaddens, NICEIC, Amicus but they're all from the 16th. Possibly a silly question as i obviously don't want to fail again but how much different is the 2391 since the 17th has come into effect? Significant enough to buy a whole new load of books (17th edition compatible) ?

I found Brian Scaddans book on Inspection, Testing and Certification a big help when taking my C&G 2391.

Guidance Notes 3 is also a must though there isn't a great deal of difference between testing methods from the 16th edition to the 17th edition - only figures which you can obtain from BS7671:2008.

If you're like me though you'll bin the GN3 16th and purchase a brand spanking new 17th version :)

I found cheapest was to buy books was to become a student member of IET then you buy books at reduced rate which was a bigger saving than membership costs.

I passed the 2391 under the 16th edn regs, I found the NICEIC inspection and testing book a good read at the time.
I think the only main difference between the two GN3s re testing is the addition of a phase rotation test in the 17th edn one.

Of course, all the references to paragraphs in BS7671 have been updated...

And I don't think it used to have pretty coloured pictures, did it?

Right guys thanks for the advice i think i've made my mind up.

I'm gonna keep reading my old books (16th including GN3, NICEIC testing & inspection, Brian Scaddens book too) plus obviously the regs (17th) that i have.

I'm also gonna buy these four books reasonable prices you lot reckon?;

-IEE On-Site Guide 2008 (£13.60).

- Practical Guide to Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations (£11.55).

- The NICEIC Guide to Domestic Periodic Inspection, Testing and Reporting 2008 (£14.16).

- Testing Electrical Installations A practical guide for electricians. (£!4.25).

I know just buying these won't make me pass but they'll hopefully be a big help so long as i read and divulge most of the info!

Has the 2391 course changed much since i last sat it 2 years ago (16th) or is it still the same sort of setup? Ie theory section 1a/b and 2?

Also i'm not totally wised up with this site is there an actual 2391 help section at all on this site?

No 2391 help section but post your queries here and I'm sure you'll get the help and advice you require.

I take it you failed it two years ago?

Well no offence but its not a test i'd sit just for the crack of doing so lol! Yeah i'm a big failure!

This will be my second time, mind you i passed my driving test 2nd go so hopefully this will be the case for this course!Fingers crossed like!

I found last time the practical i coped pretty well with but the theory especially section 2 my bottom just collapsed on me! :( The first section i remember was pretty straight forward and it kind of puts you into a false sense of security, but boy when you get on the last few questions you know that this is an elite course!

Makes the 17th edition a walk in the park, i think anyone could pass  the 17th so long as they read the regs for a few weeks before sitting the test.

Yup, that's why they call him dangerous dave!

Good luck, dave and if you pass, change your screen name to "safedave"!!

:D My names not Dave at all it's Rodney LOL! I just thought it'd wind you guys up when i first signed up as i noticed some chew on some posts i read before initially signing up!Lol!
I'll call myself shockinglybadspark or CallMeBrendaOnSundays so long as i pass!
