I am fitting a 22mm lever ball valve in place of a gate valve, and the piece of pipe at one end will have the retained 22mm nut and olive, will it be ok to screw these onto the new valve which has exactly the same pipe entry.

It`s the threads that might be different  but they might be the same

If the old nuts have the same thread as the new valve and the old olives and pipe work are in good nick you should have no problems. If the old thread is different or the old olives have been tightened so much that they have started to turn in or deform the pipe you might be better off replacing the nut and olives and even a section of pipe if its needed.

Hi Nige F and Workerant, thank you both for your comments, I have tested the threads on another identical gate valve and they are the same as the ball job.

I will dismantle the pipework tomorrow and the will pay careful attention to the pipe and olive condition, and if neccesary renew it.

If im reusing an old olive then i prefer to wrap a little ptfe round the olive just incase. Probably get abused for that

Make sure the length of pipe stub after the olive is not longer than the pipe recess in the new valve. i.e. ensurre the olive sits on the chamfered seat before the pipe bottoms out in the valve

BG engineers will be tarred with another brush (too tight to replace olives), although it would be ok for independants to do it. ;)

F sake all this about changing a valve. If the thread is the same change it .
Different slip - who cares It will pull up. Old olives Boss white or green.

I don't know what the trade will be like in another 10 years
