Hi i woundered if i would need to use acro's and strong boys to cut a 900mm opening in a cavity wall for a door in the gable end of a garage, garage is only 7 years old so masonry strength is fine. My thoughts are it should be ok without as the bricks/concrete blocks should spread the load as the opening will be pretty central to the gable, BUT i would really appreciate your thoughts before i make a mess!
Many thanks

Yes, I would use acros and strong boys, simply because it cuts out the chance factor of will it wont it, and remember, your opening should be 1200 wide at the top for lintels to go in

We rarely use acro's for such a small opening but as Tawelfryn has said you never know.

I wouldnt either Nose, but we have been in the game many years and we know how to do these things with the minimum of movement/fuss, but seeing as its a diy forum, thats why I recommend using support

im with nose.i hardly ever use acrows/strongboys for smaller openings.
in stretcher bond brickwork there is a tiny section of brickwork thats not supported,so if the masonary is tight theres not a problem.if the masonary is loose, thats a diff matter.

Hi

If you are a DIYer then I would strongly recommend that you use a 'jack all prop' or some other form of pin at the centre point of your opening - as already mentioned in a way - you willl need a 150mm bearing at each end for the lintel and this will give you a 1200mm open span and if the brickwork/blockwork above were to move you would be left with a pretty headache - assuming the brickwork doesn't land on you!

You could go with the risk, but if it all goes pear shaped who are you going to blame, and what for - the sake of one pin/jack all prop.

You use the jack all prop when installing the lintel and then take down the returns to form the door opening - check out the trade literature if you unfamiliar with jack all props.

Regards
