Taking the old shower out and found a waste pipe coming into the shower waste. Traced this up to the loft - it runs across the loft and joins the soil pipe.

I can't work this out - is it a (necessary) vent? It surely can't be an overflow?!

Any ideas? It's a pain as it is in the way of the new shower tray. Thanks.

It sounds like an air admittance pipe - just to help the shower water on its way. May not be necessary at all!
John :)

Bit of an Old Skool vent  Not lead pipe is it . Just use a Hep V O waste valve on the shower instead of a trap...or as well as if you`ve got one o those horrible shallow shower traps  And take the guts out of it so it just forms a "well" and let the Hep valve do the job of air admittance /anti backflow .

It's not lead, just standard grey plastic. Suspect it is part of the original 1970 plumbing...

Yes, it is a shallow tray - seemed a good idea at the time :) Why do you need a trap as well as a Hep vO?

I thought that was one of the functions of the HepVO - acting as an AAV but also as a one way valve for water and foul air.

A trap can pull out/let smells back. The shallower the seal the more chance it will. A Hep wont, and as you say acts as a aav.
