Removing solid fuel fire (Dual Feed)

Still have a rawlplug tool(with a broken bit) and socket former alongside a load of other forgotten tools in a box in the garage. Never know when you'd need them ;)

Jeez, I've not seen a Livingroom like that since my Granny was alive and her house in Clydebank got bombed during WW2!! Was that an Estate Agents marketing photo or do you live in that 50's retro style???

Lol, thats the estate agent photo, I have a new sofa and chairs already in, once fireplace is removed, 50" palsma being mounted on wall and then my AV equipment is being put into the fireplace on some shelves, then the place shall be decorated, only been in a couple of weeks.

Glad to hear it, good luck with the roomheater mate.

Ok, I have got most of it removed but I need to remove bricks that are resting on the boiler thingy they feel in pretty tight and not sure if its supporting the bricks above them so thought I would check here first before going any further!

I have removed all the lose filling round the sides but as you can see there are a few bricks above it.

Oh and damn this is messy, and fun

Cut them out too. The piece of cast flue pipe is behind them. Its ok the house won't fall down.

Weren't you lucky to have loose vermiculite
Its normally mixed with cement into a lightweight concrete.

Keep going

It was normal for a short length of cast iron flue pipe to be pushed up the chimney about 600-800mm & a hole cut in the chimney breast to gain access to it, a joint formed to the flue liner & the hole re-built & plastered.

Flue seems to go pretty high, do I need to keep knocking bricks out to remove it or can I just grind it off?

I think thats enough work for one day, will try and get it finished either some night this week or next sunday, I also never thought about disposal of all the bricks lol, they will have to sit there until next weekend when I get a chance to take them to the dump, working 60hour weeks atm so dont even use the living room.

Also some of the lose filling stuff seemed pretty solid at points, I improvised with a drill and wire brush attachment, soon ate through all of it :D

Another thing is the downstairs radiators are not heating after emptying and refiolling the system, all the downstairs radiators are fed from above and I have bled all the radiators, not sure what to do next?

It doesn't go too high. It will break with a hammer. Loosen the stuff around it and it will slide down. Watch it doesn't hit you. Also may be a couple of brick up there too and a fair bit soot.

Get your brother or his mate to have a wee look, might just be an airlock unless you have cut something off in the wrong place.

Haven't cut anything off yet think I shall leave that to the professionals as I like having heat.

I can hear a bubbling noise in one of the upstairs radiators hmm.

Air lock. If upstairs rads are working close them off to see if it pushes it through.

Cheers, that sorted it.

Can I not take a grinder to the flue then remove the boiler and pull it down?

Also, I will be mounting my TV above the fireplace, will I have any problems with this because I have removed bricks?
