Are there any treatments other than paint that will look effective on MDF? I would like a wood effect, but do not like paint & grain. Will ordinary varnish do the job?

use quick drying coloured varnish and exeriment to can get a basic grain effect by not using to much varnish or brushing some off with a nearly dry brush
practise on an offcut

Why dont you just use wood veneered mdf? or if its an old cupboard/door buy some wood veneer (or plastic look-alike)

You need a better quality MDF for that process. Try a high density MDF board or moisture resistant MDF board. You will still require some light sanding down after the CNC process but it will be a much better finish.
