Often hear of customers claiming to be ripped off and so called heating engineers and plumbers claiming to be the pants when it comes to them being smarter than the average bear. Following story is factual. I was involved towards the tail end of the saga.

Someone I know was getting his bathroom revamped. Plumber doing the work offered to ‘look’ at the heating system that was failing to heat the rads adequately.
While the sequence may be incorrect, work was carried out be it in different order. Megna clean was installed as sediment was suspected as the root cause of radiators failing to heat the rooms. Nil improvement.

Some radiators were replaced as it was thought these were blocked. Number changed not known as did not ask the client. No improvement.

Pipes to rads were replaced which did not make any difference.

Some rads on upper floor were turned down to force heat to other rads. Made little difference.

Pump (I had previously fitted a 6m head pump) was replaced with 6m pump as pump I had fitted was said to be not powerful enough. No change.

The primaries to cylinder and heating are pumped with a motorised valve to control rads via a roomstat. A gate valve was fitted to the combined feed and vent pipe. This has now been opened fully for safety reasons. End result no difference.

Finally the householder approached me for my thoughts. I suspected flow issues in the heating zone having checked flow and return temps with dual thermometers.

The plumber was asked to check motorised valve but claimed it was OK. He took umbrage at customer seeking second opinion. Cured the problem which turned out to be the stuck motorised valve. Fitted second MV to cylinder for HW temp control. Fitted progstat for improved heating control

And yet, even though it took him 2 weeks to do his bit, and you less than an hour, his final bill was no doubt less than yours.

Only goes to show.....er....something  ;)

Was he Gas Safe

Sadly a common occurence....recently I was the 9th "engineer" to be called by a customer to sort out a Y plan conventional system.

The system was very slow to heat the DHW (several hours) coupled with an occassional lack of heating. Opened up cylinder primary lockshield to flush it through and re-set it to a sensible setting, replaced the HTG synchron that was low on torque. Hours work start to finish.

Ah yes Danny, I wish I had a £ for every house I go into that's had a power flush done, just because 'they' have a power flush machine that cost them over a grand!!!

But my friend, we should be too long in the tooth to worry about these things. I pride myself on the fact that my large data base of customers will be maintained & new customers will always be welcome.

Hi Folks

Does anyone have DP's number.

I've got a problem with my Vokera Linea boiler and he has given people good advice on these boilers.

I live in Glasgow and want to phone him to ask what he charges.

Cheers...

Danny has his e-mail address on his 'profile'. Where in Glasgow are you?

Danny is a great guy, but if he can't help you, give me your details via a PM & I'll see if we can help you. We're in the East End.
