Well this is my first post on the site but I've been here many times. So thanks for all the old info....

Right I'm currently repairing the fireplace in the house and noticed the lintel has been removed or never there. Anyway I need a to place new one in and wondering what size.

I've attached pictures of the opening

Over all view

Top of the current fireplace

Also the base of the fireplace was higher due to filling it in with what looks like bonding, so this will be taken out, but what should I use to make it level or flat?

Not all old fireplaces have lintels, if the bricks are solid enough and your not enlarging the opening can just leave it be..

Or put in a plank precase concrete lintel 65x100mm should be fine

A what?

I thought he ment just a concrete lintel am I wrong?

Also as I've got to take out the two inner pillars that have been built some time agao on the bonding. So whats best to build it on or should I just build it up and then just raise the bit under the fire with concrete?

Precast.. yes sorry typo... "plank" is just an old skool name for a brick thick small concrete lintel.. (and yes i miss-spelled school deliberately..)

Yes the gas hob is holding up the complete house.... JK No its there and its loose its been placed there while the two bricks set just above it. I do plan to remove it and replace it with a concrete lintel just so I know its all ok (dont want to have to redo it!).

...yeah i'm diggin it now Stats.

I can't see me asking for a plank lintel next time i'm in the builders yard though, as i will end up with a scaffold board or summat.
