can anyone recommend any electrical fault finding courses for wired central heating controls?

Honeywell do them for £30, however all of the information on how they are wired can be downloaded from their website for free.

The Honeywell diagrams & courses tell you how to install standard heating set ups.

How you fault find is something that is done by understanding the diagrams, using your brain and (of course) experience.

:D

Most of my work is commercial controls where domestic heating is often referred to as 'baby boilers', 'toy town', 'tin pot' or 'the boys work' and its not often that I get involved with systems that small, when I do its usually to sort out the cock-ups created by part P qualified people who haven't got a clue what to do on anything other than a ring main or light switch.
I'm just amazed that any one is likely to offer any useful training for less than say £300 for the first day.

The Honeywell 'course' is about 25% marketing and the rest is product training and use of products.

The £30 day course was 9 am to 4 pm with lunch and 2 x tea breaks.

Content:-

Honeywell Co locations and history
Valves, thermostats and programmers
Wiring diagrams and mini exam
Wall board practical for S and Y plans- wire up boards, test, fault.
Cm wireless products and zoning
Integration of honeywell products to boiler types
Mixers and mechanical products

And you get the installation manuals, wiring manuals, product manuals etc

Honeywell realise that the course is a bit 'bread and butter' and will be introducing a advanced course for the products I was interested in late 2010. Zoning CH, wireless rad stats, auto / home control are all areas of my interest.

In the near future I intend to zone my CH rads with wireless thermostats and work zone 1 grd floor, zone 2 bedrooms, zone 3 halls.
I'd also like to see Honeywell accept that such products need to have pc / web control.
Ultimately I want some sort of interface that allows a nice graphical view of all heating areas and zones on a tablet / i product / pc screen or tv screen with pc integration :)

The Honeywell course i went on some years ago at a club house in Warrington, Lancs. was rubbish. A loud, red faced, pushy salesman arrived well late and babbled on about Honeywell for a bit, then messed about setting up a demo-rig, then liquid lunch.I dont drink, and after knocking back six pints our instructor seemed most concerned about my not drinking and spent another thirty mins. and two more pints trying to get me and another tee-totaler to "at least have one pint".
Next he gave his safety pitch, and promptly electrocuted himself. Moving quite nimbly for such a large bulk, he claimed that someone had interfered with his rig assembly. After counting his fingers he again lurched forward and caused another flash and bang. No claims of foul play that time.
Timeout was called, and, consternation, the bar keys could not be found. Salesman looking very tired and emotional told us to practice what we had learned and to always remember that we were dealing with a very dangerous business.

That sounds like 30 quids worth if it were in a theatre ;)
