What are the tell tale signs of a single feed indirect system please. I beleive its the absence of the small header tank for the ch side of the system. Friend wants two radiators with twin entry valves replaced for two new doubles. I am concerned that the extra volume of water in the system because of the two new doubles is likely to blow the air pocket, is there any way of verifying this prior to installation?. Any advice before he orders the materials is appreciated.

the extra water won't burst the bubble. Are you sure you've got what you think?
there are other systems that do not use a f&e tank.

Pretty sure twgas. Looking at the cylinder we have the cold feed from the tank in the roofspace, hotwater pipe via the top of this which vents over the top of the water tank. 2 tappings on the right of the cylinder flow/return from boiler. Off the boiler we have gas into, 2 tappins for the cylinder and 2 connections to the ch side with pump. Friend says there is no f+e tank in loft, i could not see any other way of refilling the ch side, no filling loop etc.

It does sound like a single feed.
Leave the HW turned off at prog a while before draining as the cylinder will empty when draining.
When all done refill slowly to re-establish the bubbles.

Look at the coil connections on the side of the cylinder, if they come out of the cylinder straight down and have nothing connected to to them then it's a primatic

So just to clarify the removal of the 2 single panel rads and the fitting of the 2 new double panel rads will not burst the " bubble " upon refilling?. What joy this is going to be draining down as from what he says there are no drain offs at all, with all connections being twin entry valves. This is going to take an age to drain off. :(.

cold mains off, drain down, do the work, cold main back on.

Sometimes it takes a while but it's pretty simple, the bubble will sort itself out as it refills.

Check for a drain off outside the house, if not you'll have to do it from a rad.

Might be an idea to replace this outdated cylinder there is a chance of heating water mixing with the hot water and if you are thing of adding any sort of additive/inhibitor to your heating via a rad....don`t.. ;)

There is a reason why there are not a lot of primatic cylinders out there today, or there may be but as far as i`m aware we don`t install them anymore because they are simply outdated and potentially hazardous to health! How many people fill their kettle from the hot water tap!! 1 sugar or a dose of corrosion/sludge/additive from me heating system??
