I need to tile a solid wall in a bathroom but am rather confused as to how to fix the vertical and horizontal battens accurately. Any advice would be very welcome. Cheers. ;)

if you cant nail them, using masonary nails the other simplest way is just to drill, plug and screw your battens to the walls,

i would be inclined to go with the fischer fixings myself...or just dot an dab, then mechincal fixings(screws thro the p/b and dot an dab) for your plasterboard walls,...it is p/board? or 12.5mm backerboards?

this makes a welcome change Davie mate, i think you have read this post wrongly this time and not me, unless i got it wrong

I think he means he wants to put battens on the wall to give him a staright edge and a 90 degree corner, tiles going onto concrete walls, not pb.

watch me have taken it the wrong way

You're quite right, I was referring to a solid wall and, yes, I do require the battens for a r/angle corner. But tictic's tip of using the Fischer screws sounds good as these would provide a degree of scope for fine-tuning the batten correctly. If I have failed to grasp something please let me know.

Thanks alot for your help, chaps. ;)

of course i can remember mate, i can also remember when as an apprentice ( not to long ago ha ha ha) having to screed and fix mosaic to cupboard floors, then rip it up and start again, and again and again, gets ya screeding spot on.
I also remember the days of breaking me tiles with a hammer and chisel ;)

am old mate

Just one other question, please. The said wall is at the tap/shower end of the bath. Two copper pipes run up inside this wall to a shower bar. Is it best to fix a backerboard to the wall for the tiling or should WBP plyboard be used? Thanks, again.

Ply is not a suitable tile base for walls IMO, its expensive, relatively difficult to cut & not suitable in a wet area unless you tank it; use a decent tile backer board.

Think I know what your next question might be but we’ll see. ;)

Well my local store only tends to stock Duckboard, so I would prefer to go for this. I think this is the correct name – it’s the green stuff that requires those special washers for it to be fixed to the wall. Does this sound acceptable?

Duckboard, green stuff & special washers  ; don’t know what you mean, if can you post a link or give me some more clues I can tell you?

Though a duck board is what you stand on when you get out of the shower.

Marmox is fine; many swear by it’s but not one I've used, keep meaning to try it. Follow manufacturers instructions for fixing. From your post, I don’t think your walls are stud but you should only use 12.5mm on studwork, not 6mm. 12.5mm also matches PB so ideal if your boarding out the rest of the wall.

That’s great, thanks. I will be using this over a solid wall (breezeblock). With regard to my original question about fixing battens, I assume that I can screw through the Marmox board for the battens without damage?

No problem just take it easy with the fixings, they are only suposed to be temporary & hold the 1st row of tiles up. Tape & fill screw holes after.
