:?: Is there another way to remove old olives from copper pipe without going to the expense of buying an olive puller?

You could try the really complicated method of just cutting through them with a junior hack saw

howdy,
junior hacksaw method is effective but you could try this:

1:clean all the gunge+remove old PTFE

2:spray whiskey delta 4-0

3:manipulate very carefully with waterpump pliers(most of the time the olive will slide off) ;)

or open an adjustable wrench to the diameter of the pipe.
Use the wrench like a hammer sliding it down the pipe onto the nut to knock off the olive.

won't always work, nothing will if the joint was grossly over tightened.

DOn't try to cut all the way through the olive or you'll risk damaging the pipe. Stop short and use a sharp screwdriver to twist in the slot which snaps the olive. I usually use a penknife blade - run to and fro a bit it deepens the slot.

I just use a pair of olive cutters these days....£10, no messing.

Having bought the newish Monument brass threaded olive remover, the pliers- type ones are 2nd best so redundant.

Ive always used the hacksaw method or the adjustable spanner method depending on the situation. Checked out the olive pullers here They are bottom of my shopping list right now, but when I do feel the need to cart even more tools about I will remember ChrisR's advice
