Hi All,

I have an outside light that has a g(x)24ql type lamp holder - 4 pins. Its stopped working after a year so I assumed it was the bulb. However I cant seem to get the exact same bulb in local shops, I can however get similar bulbs with the same fitting gx24q1 also 13w but a different profile (shape) - will that make a difference? As none of them are working. Yet when i switch the light on and test, I get current in 2 of the four pins? So not sure if it is the bulb or the light??

Thanks

I'm not familiar with that part number. Is there any chance you could post a photo on here of the lamp base for us to have a look at?

Also, what wattage is the failed lamp?

This is one of the new bulbs that i bought

You can notice that there are 3 loops on this bulb as opposed to 2 on the one that i have taken out - no idea if this matters?

I have also bought a megman bulb with the same fitting - same 13watt and that dosent work either - however this is shaped like a traditional bulb and not like the above two

What are you using to test the fitting with?

The style of lamp should make no difference at all. aslong as the base is the right type and the wattage is correct, then it should work.

Just a thought here, have you tried putting the new lamp in, turning the power off for 30 seconds or so an then turning the light back on?

Yeah tried that

You may kill me for this but I have tested it with an "Electricians" screwdriver the crappy ones with a bulb in the handle

G24q-1 is used for 10-13 watt pl lamps
The 4 pin lamps that fit will only work if there is a starter within the fitting somewhere, unless you have an electronic ballast then there will be no starter.
The lamp shape is irrevolent providing its 13 watt 4 pin

ha ha i think you know your self that they're rubbish!

Do you have access to a multi meter, or could you pop out and buy one?

You'll pick a basic one up for a tenner.

The lamp you want is a osram dulux D/ E lamp which is a double loop and are easily obtainable.
The "E" is a 4 pin version.
The one shown in B/Q is a T/E which is a triple loop lamp these are usually 32 watt or above, I have not seen a 13watt before.

3333Rocky - will it make a difference if it is double loop or triple loop? Will have to order the double loop online as no one seems to stock it

RF - I have a multimeter in the shed but unfortuntly dont know how to use it. It has a switch / dial on the front what do i set to? and what voltage am i looking for?

As it is 13 watt its the same, just not as compact, if it fits in the fitting then ok use it.
Have you looked for a starter in the fitting, or has it an electronic ballast
Does the holder definetely have 4 holes in use and not just two with 2 blank holes.
If it takes a 2 pin lamp then a 4 pin one may not work

Whats a starter? It has an external sensor that detects when its dark and it comes on. There is also a switch so you can switch it on during the day. This works. Aswhen i switch this switch on then put the electricians screwdriver in two of the holes it lights the bulb up in the screw driver.

It looks like 4 pin as they are not blanked off, and the old bulb is 4 pin

jtownson, if this fitting was from B&Q, bin it now. The ballast is probably cooked.

It will be a cheap electronic ballast with the photocell all built into the same unit. Simple fact is, they only last a number of switchings. Maybe a years worth.

I had one. The lamp had probably only had about 100 hours burning, but because it had been switched off after only a few minutes each time (not by me), it had worn out the ballast. No lamp will light in a cooked ballast.

If you want a decent dusk to dawn lamp, buy something from a wholesalers (better quality than B&Q's PL fittings), and a seperate photocell.

I dont know how they get away with still selling **** like this.

At a time when we are trying to get the (gnerally unwilling) general public to use more energy efficient products in their homes, crap like this is holding us back. PL fitments are generally better than BC or ES replacement CFLs, but this stuff B&Q/SF come out with isnt worth paying me to take them!

I have some very excellent PL downlights in my kitchen, very impressed with them. Because I didnt get them from B&Q.
