Hi,

I have an old style cast iron bath, with front mounted taps. The cold tap is leaking a bit, so have bought some new washers to change that, but i'm a bit stuck.

On the tap head there was a small screw which held the head to the main shaft, unscrewed that, but there is no headgear nut that i can see. it could be in the casing of the tap itself, but i don't know how to get that off.

Help please!!!!

would be good if you could post a pic, normally once you have taken the tap head off the domed chrome top part of the tap unscrews if that makes any sense.

use a pair of stilsons with something to protect the chrome and just unscrew the top part of the tap.

Thanks,

Will go pick a pair up tomorrow. Do you think the washer will be standard size, or could it be a special?

The house was built in 1953, and i believe the bath and taps are original.

not normally standard size...think about an inch. but if it will come out (if any of it remaining ) then take to some plumbers merch. and see

looking at the age of that tap................its time for a new bath room suite.

The nut to undo the head gear is under the shroud. The nut will be very tight
and it will be best to use a good spanner or adjustable and give it a good
sharp clout with a hammer or a bigger spanner.

Use a spanner or adjustables to undo the shroud (you could use grips near the top with rag or somthing under to avoid dammage). Don't try to use
stillsons or simmilar to shift it as it will not work.

care to enlighten me why stilsons wont work ?

Stilsons will compress the threads on thin nuts and thin walled pipe and
prevent them from turning.

Most expiranced plumbers know it is usually a waste of time trying to shift
union nuts, pump valve nuts and other thin walled fittings etc with stilsons and would use more appropriate tools (including hammer and chisel)

so you think that these old taps are thin walled and that stilsons will distort the thread ?

It is the the shroud that is very thin walled and not the tap body itself.
With the shroud removed it is easy to distort these with just finger
pressure. That is why a spanner should be used when there is flats on the
bottom of the shroud or grips or strap wrench near the top where there is no
chance of compressing the threads.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer.
