Hello

I stripped back the wall paper from the stair well and found tape between the boards with about 2mm of plaster on top of it. It shows through and looks awful as you can see the vertical lines of it running down the walls. Can i remove it and fill with filler? If not what can i do as the plaster on top of it is so thin i don't know why they bothered at all as it doesn't hide it at all.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
(Edit:) I want to paint not paper so i need to hide it somehow.

That's the problem with joints that are taped,, they're either good, or bad. There's not much "you" can do about it really, unless you can tape, but if i was in your shoes, and wanted a job good enough to paint, i'd get 2 or 3 reputable plasterers in, get a quote from each,,, and have the walls re- taped, (properly),, and skimmed with plaster.

Thats the way to go although you could re tape it if you have the minerals for the job, it isnt difficult if you take your time but is is very time consuming!

I'm confused - are we talking about tape or mesh that has "surfaced"

Wow,thanks for replies. I didn't know if anyone would have the time to help.

I've attached a couple of pics to clarify what i mean.

this picture is common around the house where the tape has "bubbled". any thoughts on how to improve this?

This picture on the stairs shows a "crack" where the tape is between the boardsand clearly you can see what i mean about it looking unsightly.

This one is showing a horizontal line on the stair well where the upstairs floor is against the stair well wall and it's getting worse (above where
paper was).

This one is in the front room, again the tape has come away on one side and looks horrid.

When you say i could re-tape it (and please forgive my ignorance) is it like industrial masking tape? I think i may manage to do that if its simply a case of sticking the tape down and using filler over the top?

Your advice is very much apreciatedand if felt i need to get a plasterer in then i shall after seeing the pics and claifying how difficult taping is.

hi wookie having looked at your pictures i think the best way to go is as roughcaster mentioned, take all the tapes off re tape and skim, the large crack will almost definatley come back if not done right, the boards are a good few mm apart and it looks to me that it needs taping and dubbed with bonding, is the whole house boarded?
i think anyone who is debating to board rather than float and set should take a look at these pictures, but the good news is its not hard to put right

is the whole house boarded?

Hi Steve. Yes the whole house is boarded. The kitchen was the biggest shocker where the wall between the kitchen and the front room i was putting in 3 extra sockets kitchen side (i'm on a low income with kids so try and do as much of the "donkey work" as i can myself before calling in the pros to do the stuff i am unable to) so my mate whose an electrician could wire them up. Measured around the socket used a drill to start the jig saw hole - and went straight through the wall!! Discovered the "wall" was infact 2 plasterboards stuck back to back on an outside frame work!

Many many thanks for all your guys advice and apologies roughcaster for reposting a problem already hosted. I did have a look to help myself but obviously missed that one. Was an intresting read and i'll go down that route of carefully digging the tape out re taping and if i don't feel confident having a go at filling will get a pro in to do it for me.

All the best guys and thank you VERY much for support. this is a great forum and i can see my being back with my next DIY cock up !!
