self employed AND PAYE?

A pure guess, but this could come under being a "dependant".

so if my dad bought me a car and I go round and paint his fences and shed, re-felt it and clear out and board the loft for him as a thank you I have to declare it even when no money changed hands?

do I also have to declare my christmas gifts from my parents?

2nd thing 1st, no as it is a gift and unless a massive amount it wont be included,
we are talking earnings, so ALL earnings need to be declared, phone the tax office give all your dtails and tell them you do free work for all your family and they in turn pay your mortgae and do online shopping for you then ask if this is allowed, bet i know the answer, your analogy isnt great as we all do things for family etc for free, thats why company cars were invented as payment in kind was acceptable then they taxed it,

another thing people used to say was if you were unemployed the benefit office had to actually catch you receiving money for work for it to be illegasl, this is untrue, if you sign on for benefit you cant work 40hrs a week for free (then get a wee envelope, by slight of hand) and be legal, you have to declare all work done whether free or paid, so that thyey cancatch you out trhat way as they wont let you work for free for a firm and claim benefit as they know it is a scam. as said before doing work for family etc will never stop and if you get a bung from them it is virtually untraceable, it doesnt however make it legal

Anyone can be Self Employed and Employed at the same time, it all depends on the facts of the engagement.

Basically if you act as a "servant" to a "master" then you are employed, if you provide services to anyone who will pay for them you are self employed (Assuming you are not a Company Director).

The exemption (Capital Gains Tax) is currently £10,000 per year, but it relates to gifts of cash , assets, investments etc, not items provided to dependants.

If you are Self Employed business expenditure is deductible, but debts are not, although interest on loans that qualify for business expenditure can be claimed. The HMRC Website has lots of FREE advice and leaflets to download

I think you can barter for services, as there was a few local initiatives doing the rounds a while back - I think the key is that you are not allowed to exchange your 'normal' service.

So if you're an accountant you can wash cars in exchange for something, but any accountancy work has to be declared.
