I'm with the chippy on this one. My GF place has been meshed and rendered and it's never been any bother in 20 years.

Usually best to double mesh it on to felt , so the muck gets inbetween the mesh and keys better.....

ty for advice but does the timber not rot quicker with no felt under the mesh

Use WBP ply and add SBR to your render. Then it will be waterproof.

Any time i've rendered/roughcasted onto timber, it's always been felted first. The photos below (taken in the mid 80's) are of a small cottage, myself and a labourer friend roughcasted. It was built many years ago from "railway sleepers", sheeted with corrugated iron. The corrugated sheeting was removed,, the walls felted, battened, and covered with wire lath, scratched coated and then roughcasted. You probably couldn't get away with it nowadays.
A wbp, plywood boarded dormer would not be a problem done the same way.

Roughcaster.

cheers for the replies.around the window has been done in ply.the felt will be put on by the chippy.i was going to fix the mesh onto this.i was wondering what the battens were for.mabye i refer to them as something else.lattes?

The battens Scud are for fixing the mesh onto. It allows the render scratch
coat, room to build up behind the wire lath and grip onto it. For a small job,, a 2"x1" batten or similar would be ideal.

Hey RC - did you take those pics with your mobile? Or your digital camera?

I never took the photo's Joe. The wife of the man standing talking to me in pic number 3 took them. I don't think mobile phones or digi cams were very common in the mid 1980's. It might have been taken with a Box Brownie though.

That's a young man mate. You are the old geezer standing up.

24 years ago i was a young ish man,, nowadays, i could be the old geezer standing up,,, :( but i'm young at heart Joe. ;)
