I put in a two way dimmer switch. I can turn it on and off from one end. However, at the other end (not dimmer) I can only turn it off - not on. Help!

you have got common and either L1 or L2 confused (or just one broken line) - can you describe what is at both ends in more detail - which of the 3 popular 2 way lighting types in the referecne section do you have in your case...

I take it that what you mean is that if the light is on, you can turn it off with the dimmer or the switch, but if it you turn it off with the dimmer you can only turn it on with the dimmer?

Surely if it is on, and you go to the switch and turn it off, you can then turn it back on there?

Did you originally have a switch at both ends, and did they both work OK?

When you replaced one switch with the dimmer, did you wire it up the way the switch had been wired?

Yes, I connected up the wires in the same way as the previous switch. As the wires are the old fashioned colours, I had two black and one red (or two red and one black), so I put a peice of white sticky tape around the com wire to make sure I got it right. Maybe one of the wires is loose. As I will not be visiting the house for another fortnight, I will take a look then. Thank you for all your help. Incidentally, the dimmer switch fitted did not have enough watts for the job, hence the change.

Thank you for the diagram.

However, I only have black and red wires (not including the earth which is half yellow and half green). Is this my problem. Should I try swopping the two wires of the same colour?

Not until you are sure of what you actually have best to mark it up and make notes so you can get back.. Some dimmers are a bit unclear as to which really is the comm terminal.

But you said you marked the COM wire so you didn't get them mixed up...

But mixing up the red com and the red strapper would produce the symptoms you describe (if what I asked earlier is the case)....

Another Q - how many earth conductors do you have? Are there any incoming ones, or is there only one running between the two switch positions?

I have a similar problem - but can't access the diagram from this forum that would probably solve my problem (but the link has expired), please could someone re-list or read-on and tell me which terminal to connect my 'black' wire upstairs to..... (PS thanks)

Downstairs switch
L2 BLACK
Comm GREY
L1 BROWN

Upstairs switch
L2 BLUE, assumed from supply-side
Comm GREY
L1 BROWN (x2), one from downstairs, one from supply-side

Question is: UPSTAIRS where do I connect BLACK which comes from downstairs (but pulled out of terminal when I removed switch to decorate) - since then I have to have the switch on downstairs to operate the switch upstairs (which is actually a dimmer, but worked previously)

thanks
Masha

What type of dimmer have you installed?

Some work as a direct replacement for a 2-way switch, others have a master / slave relationship with remote switches, and may require a change to the wiring of the remote switch.

Sometimes different labelling conventions for switch terminals can confuse things too.

Thanks very much that schematic is what I needed. as it was working previously (before th black wire became disconnected), I will try to reinstated this using my trusty multimeter and the diagram. Many thanks

Hi Masha , I have same problem , how did you resolve it? Thanks

I've not resolved it yet, but I am armed with some printed out wiring diagrams a torch and my multimeter and planning to have a look this coming weekend when I visit the property. I will report back early next week.

stick it in L2 with the blue wire. these wires should have brown sleeving on them to identify them all as 'live'.
