Hi all, I am a builder with years of experience in domestic dwellings but have recently started taking on commercial work aswell.
I have just won a maintenance contract for a large food restuarant and they called me the other day with afew jobs I have to do, one being changing light tubes in there shop signs.
My question being can i legally change a light tube without being part p registered, i know I cannot really do anything with electrics or gas without being qualified so I don't, but just wanted to question this as it is such a easy job, same as wiring up a plug, can i do simply things like these?

I am just trying to abide by the rules, dont want to end up in a legal battle over a £10 job.

Cheers

Part P only applies to domestic premises with commercial it is all covered with the health and safety at work act. There are no qualifications required to be an electrician. (You could come from another country or been taught by your dad who was an electrician before you.) However if something goes wrong you do need to be able to prove you had the skill required to do the job and without qualifications that is hard.

I would follow the normal procedure. Make out a method statement followed by risk assessment as you would for any job and put down things like switch off and lock off FCU etc. Then say how there is minimum risk and do the job. If you can show if anything goes wrong how you did everything you could to remove risk then all should be OK. Don't forget glass and food often you need to use coated tubes so if they break the glass can not get into food. Or have empty restaurant when you change them.

Like for like replacement is allowed under Part P. But remember you are a business so HSE is watching you. So again method statement and risk assessment. There are exceptions like changing a consumer unit is not permitted without Part P even if like for like.
