Hi, I have so far had one of my doors hung using stainless steel hinges and a pewter door handle but I have read on a couple of the posts on here not to use this on oak.

Is this the case, would the door manufacturer/supplier state something and neither has my joiner raised any concerns. Just wondering if I need to rethink our selections?

Many thanks

stainless is absolutely fine as is brass not sure about pewter
its the tannin in the oak that reacts with steel or iron and causes black streaks

It's generally not advised to put lead in contact with oak as the tannins will react with the lead. Now pewter used to be a lead alloy but your handles most likey have no lead in them and will be mostly (something like 80-90% ) tin which is pretty safe and inert, hence it's use in food tins so I'd hazard a guess that there shouldn't be a problem. Anyway you could always take off your first handle and inspect it and the door closely.

As said the tannin in the oak can attack the lead and cause a white "bloom" of oxide on the surface of the lead this can make the lead brittle over time but there is unlikely to be enough lead in your hardware to cause a problem, just make sure the hinges and hardware are fixed with stainless screws.
