My expansion tank rubber diaphragm has had it and I am unable to continue putting air into the air side with a footpump as now the pressure drops every few hours.
I have a small drip from the heat exchanger on the seam which I think has been there for a long time.

Also I was bleeding the radiators upstairs every few days.

I have a Vaillant combi and one of these moels numbers - 112E, 182E,242E - as shown on the instruction manual. (Not sure which exactly as quite old)

I turned the boiler off for a while until I returned from abroad and now I am back and the boiler would not fire up at all. Just kept clicking and then the reset button popped out. I kept trying as the instructions said but now it wont pop out and wont click or come on at all. Have I blown a fuse??

How can I get it to start - advice please.

I was thinking about replacing the expansion tank with an external one but am a bit unsure about how to do this.

I read on the forum that it can be put anywhere but on what part of the circuit - pipe going to radiators or pipe coming back from radiators or .......?

Can someone give me easy to understand instruction list oh and where do I buy one from? Waht tools do I need etc

I would appreciate any help as I am freezing cold!

If the expansion vessel is built in, replace with built in too. Get advise from a friend on the best plumber in your area, not how to (potentially) cause more problems.

I do not want to replace with built in as most repair guys say put in an external tank and leave existing in place as its more hassle and more damage can be done by taking the boiler off the wall and replacing the existing.

The experts say that its better to leave in situ and it is a very simple job to add an external one - see many responses on this forum. I just want too know how and where to add it.

if you have a leaking heat exchanger its [probably a good idea to sort that out at the same time. if you cant sort it then its time to get a new boiler.

that small leak can eventually burst causing all sorts of lovely water damage and a bigger repair cost.

or

it can slowly drip and drip util it maskes anice little hole in the case giving you some level of carbon m onoxide poisoning.

food for thought.

the exp ves is on the rear of your boiler and requires the boiler off the wall to change.thats why they recomend an external.as said get hex renewed as it will be wrecking burner/injectors over time.theres a chance the pump may be stuck as you were away and the system water has drained

The pump is not stuck. The drip on the heat exchanger has been there for more than 6 years that I know of. It drips once every few hours. It drips onto a metal tray away from any other parts of the bolier. I catch it in a metal dish. It is not enclosed in anything so dont see how it can cause a hole or carbon monoxide poisoning. It is notover burners and injectors but out at the side away from anything. It looks to be the last part which takes hot water away from the exchanger. This is not a big problem.

I know I need a new expansion vessel and want some advice on fitting and where.

I turned off all heating whilst away. When I came back i started it up as usual. The pressure had dropped as usual and I added more water and pressed the on button and then the reset button. Whilst pressing the reset button Iheard clicking but it did not fire up. After trying for a number of times (as per instructions) it stopped clicking and reset button did not pop out and now no sound and no action.

So I need some advice on why and what is causing it NOT to fire up.?

If you notice by the responses you have got, there is a reluctance to assist you on this matter. It's not a closing of ranks, it's probably more an indication to call in an expert to do the work, they will be able to see what they need to replace, etc. :)

Running away with yourself pat, slow down, people are not happy with your safety issues,I'm a boilerman wannabe, but, FFS, get someone in.

Your are not on the safety level today, dripping boiler to start with, but your happy as it's been like that for 6 years?
