I have a sanivite3 macerator fitted under my kitchen sink. It is connected to the sink and the washing machine. Since yesterday it keeps pumping briefly every 20 minutes or so but there is no liquid going into it. It is about 2 years old and is in use every day. What could be the problem.

There should be a non return valve in the discharge elbow on top of the unit.This is basically a rubber flap that will open when water is pumped from the unit, and will close to stop any water backflowing into the unit from the discharge pipework. This flap can get stuck so you will constantly have water leaking into the unit from the discharge pipework. Remove discharge elbow and give it a good clean and make sure the flap closes and opens correctly.
