I need to replace my current boiler and a friend of a friend has given me what I think is a reasonable quote, but I'd like to see what you guys think, having much more experience than me.

I've asked for a reasonable budget combi-boiler to be fitted and this is what he quotes for:

Vokera Compact A 29kW including flue
Replace gas line to 22mm pipe
Fitting of condenstate pipework
Parts & Sundries
Power flushing system cleanse

£990 all in.

The original installation is in a reasonable location, positioned close to the gas main and meter, so it should be a straightforward job, except for some fettling with the condensate installation.

Does that sound like a reasonable price?

Price is cheap, as is the quality of the boiler. Expect to pay a similar amount as the install cost in repairs by the time the vokera will have given up.

Well at that price he must be a mate, vokera are mid range and are ok we have fitted hundreds over the years ans not to many problems, though have recently switched to Ariston when asked for mid range, vaillant or Wb or atag for better

I'd rip his hand off then take out a service contract for parts and labour maintenance.

I doubt very much that the chap that quoted for this would be willing to do much warrantee work on it.  He'd have to go part time on his day time job.

Thanks for the replies.

He's happy to fit any boiler for me, I just asked him to keep price to a minimum as I'm struggling a bit at the moment and this is what he suggested.

If the Vokera's are troublesome, I can ask him to see what else he can pick up at a reasonable price. He describes them as a "decent budget range boiler" but I can try to stretch a bit more if it's going to be nothing but trouble.

Bear in mind that I'm looking to sell the house in a couple of years and don't want to pay over the odds, but obviously, at the same time, I don't want to be fixing it every week either.

Fit a Viessmann with a five year warrantee and then when you sell you can benefit from the boiler still having three years warrantee to go.

Must be an approved installer though.

Smells fishy to me just a bit too cheap -even for mates rates!!

i think his powerflush will involve opening the drain, fitting the boiler and filling it back up :D

I hate it when my mates ask me to work well under the going rate, so they can save money.

Well when I say hate, I don't really, cos I don't do it. If your gonna pay him roughly half the going rate, is it ok that he does the job to half the standard he usually would?

It could well cause you problems buddy, cos if it goes tits up he won't fancy coming back, as he undercharged you in the first place!

Never work for 'mates rates' - not even for family. Free or full whack I'm afraid.

even custards think boilers come with a lifetime guarantee and you should repair free gratis 3 years down the line

My point is Ben that its pretty easy to fall out with mates when money is involved.
